Under $40k, I take it you're talking about a used luxury car?

In-laws had one. It's a one off experience and they probably just treated it like crap. Car was about 4 years old and I had to drive it somewhere right when I was shopping for vehicles. This rode like crap. Felt like it was falling apart.
Not a one off experience. My parents had the first generation Genesis (2011 or so) and it fell apart after a couple of years and 40,000 miles. They had everything from a busted radiator to flaking paint on that car. A fender liner fell off of it once while they were driving in Memphis. One of the other fender liners fell off a few thousand miles later. A weird electrical problem stalled the engine at random times, and Hyundai couldn't fix it unless it was plugged into their computer when it happened. Even the wheels were defective and had to be replaced.
They drove the loaner Sonata more than they did their own Genesis. It was a poorly built car in ways that were almost funny now that I think about it.
It looked awesome though.
They had a black full sized Buick sedan around the same time (Lacrosse?). It didn't handle as well, but was otherwise a much better car and never gave them any trouble. Buick makes some pretty sturdy cars. They are as quiet as a bank vault too. Definitely a good choice if you need a highway car.

Mercedes E350, 2-3 year old lease returns wholesale for $28,000 ~ $30,000, basically 50% of their cost new.
I can put you in touch with a flat fee specialty dealer who has access to MB Financing's direct auction/wholesale distribution division. It's basically eBay on steroids for higher end cars. There are equivalent direct wholesale channels for BMW and Infiniti too, Lexus primarily distributes lease returns by auction.
You save thousands over a traditional dealer, the car is inspected & graded, the car will still be under factory warranty. I bought a 2015 Lexus ES with ~20,000 miles from him four months ago, I'll never buy a car from a traditional dealer again.

Audi A4 is an excellent vehicle but might be on the small side of mid sized.
A4 is absolutely on the small side of mid sized. It's not mid sized at all and you'd have trouble fitting one set of golf clubs in the trunk.
You need to look at Audi A6s or mid sized infinitis. (But screw those maintenance costs on the Germans). My M37 fits 3 sets of golf clubs no problem.

I paid 28k for an 2013 Audi s4 with 4ok miles.
Doesn't fit two sets of clubs without folding the rear seat. Got two friends with S4s to verify
ETA: To answer OP's question, I'd look at a certified Lexus ES. You can get damn close to new in that price range.

Take a look at Infiniti’s entry level. I bought a G37 in 2009 (called something different now) and it was a great vehicle. Sold it at 120k miles and never had an issue. Plenty of speed for a sedan. Good technology. Overall good value.

The sad fact is that you won't be able to get a NEW "luxury" car for under $40k. If i were to get a luxury sedan right now, it would be a used cadillac CT6 with the 3.0 twin turbo. the 2016 one goes for roughly about 45k i think.

Also, the avalon is a good luxury car that is under rated. It is basically Lexus luxury for a cheaper price only because it has the toyota symbol. It is huge inside.

In that price range for new, I'd look at Toyota Avalon or Kia Cadenza.

The Lexus benefits from much nicer materials. The Avalon is a great car, but you're getting more than a badge for your money with the ES.

Farquad can't comprehend reading or couldn't find a response on reddit to copy and paste.
QX60 isn't under $40k and isn't a sedan.

Email me and I'll share my experience with the process. I've referred a few friends to him and I've gotten familiar with the process I'm actually considering partnering with the guy, marketing the on-demand, flat fee vcustom auto buying service on its own. He's mostly focused on specialty, one-off deals and does the flat fee buying as a secondary part of the business.

I am starting to look at 2016 Equus by Hyundai... big car ...still with a couple of years of warranty... under 30k. want depreciation to work for me..

Buying new is a bad idea. Under 30k miles are always in good shape and half the cost.

Have you calculated how much in gas mileage you would have to get to actually save the money spent on buying a new car?
Unless you drive a lot of miles you will have to buy a very cheap car with high mpg to realize savings.
