re: My wife was scammed

I believe you. The a$$holes are well rehearsed, researched the impersonated deputy names, and even changed their phone ID to make it appear they are legit. As some other poster said, there were walkie-talkie background squawks to make it even more convincing to people who have little if any police experience. My attempted scammers were black and had a professional tone to their pitch.
Your wife is embarrassed and maybe a little gentleness and compassion might be in order.

My wife has gotten a similar call. A Sargent from the BRPD called and said she missed federal jury duty and there was a warrant out for her arrest. If she didn’t pay a fine she would be arrested. My wife was smart enough to know it was a scam.

Damn that sucks. Thankfully, they’d find it virtually impossible to scam my wife in this manner. For starters, she’s so jaded from spam calls that, unless she has you saved into her contacts, she’s not answering when you call. Then there’s the fact that, even if they did somehow contact her, I have have alerts set up on our bank account, personal CC, and business CC, that inform me the instant there is a transaction, complete with who the transaction is to, and the amount of said transaction. So, even if she tried withdrawing money, I’d know about it immediately.
And on top of all that, she’s also not as gullible as the typical woman.

I can't believe anyone in this day and age is that stupid

Some of y'all are total assholes. Scammers scam because it works. Have a little compassion.

The jury duty scam almost got me. When the “cop” called me, the caller ID said it was from my local Sheriff’s department. They somehow got the caller ID to clone the number.

bullshite, somebody calls out of the blue, makes a threat and instead of using any shred of common sense the stupid count forks over $17k, without even questioning anyone or calling husband? lawyer? complete idiot, they deserve it and each other(assuming this isn't a troll)

Wow. That’s a lot to fall for. I know of a couple who got scammed and they aren’t stupid. It was a slick one via computer access if I recall.

I'm sorry, but there is not a police department in the United States that's (a) going to call you before they show up with a warrant, and (b) ask for $17,000 to make it all disappear. If you're even important enough to warrant a bribe, it's going to be a hell of a lot more than 17k. Everyone should know that... it's not some obscure crim pro guideline.

Do you never leave the house or turn on the TV? There are some really stupid people out there.

It starts out pretty convincing depending on who calls you.
Who called you? Who even answers the phone if the call isn’t someone already in your contacts?

My SO actually just got scammed, too. Also not a “naive” individual. It was supposedly UPS saying they tried to deliver a package that required signature and they would only try one more time the next day before sending it back. What’s weird is that we were actually out of town until 2 days later and he was expecting a package that required signature. They said you can pay a $1 fee for them to hold it an extra day. He paid with his credit card then immediately realized he’d been scammed and cancelled the card. The scammers tried to charge $500 to some “tour” company not 5 minutes later but it was declined because the card was cancelled. Close call.

The normal size i guess. But the thing is, it’s a hell of a coincidence that we were out of town just the amount of time it would take to need the “extra day.”
