To be fair, I don't think they can get Woodford with SNAP, either.

I would imagine that Utah has one of the lowest rates of SNAP usage nationally.

You'd be right. At 4.8%, utah has the lowest snap utilization in the country. Nationwide average is around 12%.

I just read an article that pushed higher than 12%, but I am not sure of the time frame.

quote:

Food stamp (SNAP) participation, for example, stands at 15.5% nationwide but rises to 21.4% among refugees.

Medicaid and CHIP enrollment shows a similar pattern: 17.2% of Americans participate, compared with 23.6% of refugees or 26.5% when US-born children of refugees are included.

Disparities are even more pronounced in other programs. Usage of Supplemental Security Income (SSI), the cash welfare program for the elderly and disabled, is nearly three times higher among refugees and asylees than among the general population (7.3% versus 2.6%).

Housing assistance participation more than doubles, rising from 3.3% nationally to 7.5% for refugees. Child Tax Credit usage likewise doubles, increasing from 6.2% to 12.9%.

A new law passed by the Utah legislature earlier this year takes effect on Jan. 1, 2026, preventing those on the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP) from using those funds to buy sugary carbonated drinks.

Just want to clarify, there is no law banning soft drinks. The bill they signed required the State to submit a waiver request to the Federal Government to exclude soft drinks from eligible purchases in Utah.

Feds control SNAP. States have to ask permission via waiver to restrict certain items.

Authorizing State departments to submit a waiver can also be done via Executive Order.

SALT LAKE CITY (KUTV) — At the start of the new year, Utahns will no longer be able to use SNAP benefits to buy soft drinks. I just hope I don’t see any farmers buying soft drinks with that $13 billion we just gave them.

“The privilege to be able to sit there and be okay with some child not getting to drink soft drinks and experience the joy of being a child because their parents are working poor due to this capitalistic hellhole”- some r/Utah poster, probably.

4cubbies raises hand but it is downright systematic racism targeting brown people and now what are they supposed to drink?

Good on Utah. No bigger sign of the American corporate overlord system than public subsidies for poor people to mainline high fructose corn syrup.

SNAP recipients should only receive the basics: milk, water, rice, beans, and one type of meat. That's it.

You want something else? Go get a job and pay for it.

The last time a thread like this was started, a bunch of people came into the thread to claim it is “big govt” and “anti-freedom” to support restrictions like this. Most of these posters were from NOLA, north BR, Shreveport, etc.

I remember the outrage on here around the discussion on New York wanting to limit the sizes of sugary drinks. It was almost unanimous against it. I bet most of those in that thread are on the fat shot now and bitching about the costs of health insurance.
