“Coon” may be seen as a racial slur towards blacks.
But “coonass” is not at all. Anybody who disagrees needs a trip to Terrebonne Parish.

Bergeron said he believes he’s Cajun and coonass and doesn’t care if people call him that. He said his family and friends don’t take it in a derogatory way either.
Also he said the song is still being played on KBON and is the most requested song the station has.

The 122nd fighter squadron based at NAS JRB New Orleans isn't the coonass militia anymore. They are officially known as the Bayou Militia, due to the same out of control PC crap like what is in this article.

I remember when they tried to get Nick Saban on this a few years ago.

Our HS football teams unified into a single group. They chose a term which represented both schools.
Until some do gooder found that this term was derogatory toward natives on the urban dictionary. Huge fuss, can't use the name.
