I’ve went thru it twice, with my oldest it wasn’t too bad. Like $125 extra a month until he started getting tickets. The day he turned 18 he got his own policy. My youngest turned 16 in feb last year, he increased out premium about $175 but he is a great driver with good grade discount.
My wife is a commercial insurance agent but before she wrote property and casualty (home and auto). About 15 years ago she had a lady come in with her 16 year old daughter, they had went to the local Ford dealership and bought the daughter a brand new Mustang GT. I don’t remember the exact cost but it was over $500 or $600 a month just for the insurance. My wife said they left with the daughter in tears as the mom had excluded the girl from the Mustang and put the girl only on the family mini van. She said a lot of insurance companies used to let you exclude kids from certain vehicles on a policy. According to her they don’t let you do that anymore and normally rate the riskiest driver on the most expensive vehicle.

There's good reason why the premiums are so high. I have 10+ nephews and nieces. Kids getting into accidents at a very high rate. Plus autobody repair is over the top expensive now.

Hypothetical… no dawg in this hunt.
Is it possible to have his phone (car) speed tracked to you. Not the insurance company. But reported to you as a parent. Just knowing he’s being monitored could make a difference. Like a chemistry instructor use to reference… kids are like magnetism the further they get from the source the weaker the hold… he was talking kids and premarital sex but the concept is the same. The further from the parents reach the less their instilled warnings may hold sway.

The ins company gets info from
Dmv I believe. They told me any licensed driver living in my house had to be on the policy unless we specifically exclude them from driving the vehicle.
I have a 20 yr old and 18 yr old driving. $600/mo for their 2012 and 2014 cars.
16 yr old son will be added later this yr. Mortgage/rent type numbers per month in just car insurance when adding up our cars too. Ridiculous!!!

My oldest son's first vehicle was a Tundra with the 5.7. Didn't take long to realize that was way too much power

get a 2nd car for grandma listed and insured in her name with maxed out coverage. kid borrows the car from grandma occasionally. would work alot better if grandma lived close and the car would stay there when not in use. This will work until the first accident.

And watch the footage, prior to a wreck. If they are driving like a dumbass take the keys.

If there is room in your family dynamics or arrangements, real appreciation for the responsibility of driving comes from paying you monthly for the insurance.

Just did that 2 years ago.. specifically looked for a small 2 seat pickup.... found a '07 v6 Ranger. Insurance wasn't cheap but has gotten better.
Perfect for school and work, but avoids the typical kid thing with cramming 6 kids into a little car just so 6 kids are hurt if something happens.
But, the deal is he covers 2/3 of insurance and all maintenance costs (all of which he's learning to do on his own).

Same but it was a 16 yo male and $850/month. I sure cussed me out since I was the one who decide to buy a high performance car for his kid :rotflmao. This number was cir 2005.
Most deny coverage if not on driver list now, before the carrier would option paying the back premiums to get coverage.
Cheating the system is a main reason rates are so high and getgordon.

I have Allstate and am in Louisiana.
My agent recommended that I get a separate policy for my teens when they started driving for the following reason:
If they get in a crash my rates will go up. If they become responsible for their own insurance later, both our rates will be set based on their at fault crash. If they have their own policy, only their rate will be higher.
I have a family policy as I intend to pay their insurance until they get financially set after college.

Most underwriting automatically assigns the riskiest driver to the riskiest vehicle for rating purposes.
All of the crap in this thread about gaming the system has been accounted for, years ago.
Every other advice of driving grandmas car or a vehicle not at your garaging address is just fraud. Good luck getting a claim paid out.
