it's like that all over South America, and their conditions probably look good to a lot of folks in Africa

A fair amount of "poor" people own their own home.
70 percent own a car.

Poverty here now is having an iPhone 12 . Very few are actually going hungry and completely destitute
The modern era is the only time in human history where the wealthy are thin and the poor are obese.

In my 30 years of law enforcement - all on road patrol - I never was in a house that didn't have a color TV and the occupants didn't have cell phones. And I worked in the Glades (Belle Glade, Pahokee, South Bay), Dyson Circle in WPB, San Castle, etc.
In the ER, Scruffy sees dirty, disheveled children…with a cellphone, with obese parents, who often have 2 cellphones.

When’s the last time you saw a hobo without a phone. If you can afford a phone and means to charge it, you can work.

Poor people in this country live in bigger homes than the middle class in other countries, have full size SUVs, smartphones, TVs, cable, internet, plenty of food.

I met a Chinese businessman in San Francisco who was the father of one of my sisters college friends. He was blown away at the level of wealth and infrastructure in rural America. He said no other country has rural towns like we do that have modern amenities even in the poorest areas.

You want to see "poverty", step foot in pretty much any country outside Western Europe and the US and Canada.

Eh, nobody in Florida’s knows what’s going on in that area either. The Florida Heartland is pretty weird- I grew up in Ft. Lauderdale and it’s really only something like 90 minutes away, yet the Heartland was about as well known to South Floridians as some region of Oregon or something.

because they’re all from the northeast and have that same mentality up there, I always used to say, when I lived in Palm Beach County, that to find the south in Florida you have to go north, and if La, Ms, Al, Ga, etc., think they have the market cornered on being redneck then they haven’t been to middle Fl

When I tell people I was born in Pahokee, they look at me like I was born in the Congo.

You could have easily said "I do very well for myself" instead of flexing a half million dollar salary.

Did a mission trip in Guatemala at an orphanage, I wish I could've brought my kids with me to point out how amazing they have it here.

I was very fortunate to go on one for a few weeks to Zimbabwe and South Africa , in 2007 during the height of the Mugabe regime, with runaway inflation .

It was exactly what my incredibly spoiled arse needed to see. To see the fossil watch I had on, while not even that nice could’ve fed a family for a few months over there, the Patagonia jacket I had where the bush people didn’t have jackets at all.

Go to the Mississippi Delta if you want to see some real poverty.

I'm guessing you've never had a reason to go there.
