No. It’s not money math. It’s the United States of America.

It’s straight up theft. It’s paid for and the government can still take it if you don’t pay your measly few grand every year. It’s just the government’s way of letting you know you’re a peon and you never truly own anything. You’re just a slave to the state. It just disgusts me. At least where I live you can be exempt if you’re over 65. How generous of the Proletariat!

quote:Just to set the record straight; actually, they didn't exist before property taxes.
Amazing how all of these things existed before property taxes.
Property taxes have existed in some form or another since before ancient Egypt. They have existed in the US since before the Declaration of Independence; the early Puritans in Massachusetts enacted a property tax on landowners. At one point in the early 1800s , there was a federal property tax; it was later repealed, but state and local governments continue to collect property taxes.
All of this occurred well before things such as electricity, public water systems, curb and gutter roads, and EMS services.
The only major country without any property tax is Communist China, as the Chinese government owns all lands in China and the government does not tax homeowners.

Ok. Maintain the road to it. And don’t step foot on a sidewalk, park, bridge, etc. This take is so fricking dumb.
Is there massive waste and welfare programs full of fraud? Yes.
But the “dis is mine” attitude is truly retarded. Society functions when we are connected not me me me.

I moved to Ponchatoula in 2023 after 25 years out in New Mexico. In those 25 years I received zero benefit from my property taxes. In the 3 short years I've been here Tangipahoa parish has trimmed the tree branches in my neighborhood reducing power outages during storms. They changed the street lights that were out when I called. And the best thing they did was when I called to complain about the mosquitos, 3 days later a crop duster flew over a 3 mile radius of my house and sprayed. A neighbor suggested that I call and I just laughed. I couldn't believe they actually did it. And it worked. Having said that, I despise paying property taxes but at least I'm getting some return on my money since I've been here.

If it were not property as basis, it world be something else. It takes money to run schools, police, fire depts etc.
A spreadsheet. Income to cover expenses. Simply put, math.
I think many people just take this for granted.
Me, me, me types who think only of themselves and their own tax burden. As if no one else exists.
No one loves paying taxes. But the society we live in ain’t free. In real world, fire and police deserve to get paid for protecting the me, me, me.

Other countries provide the same emergency services w/o as much taxes as the US.
Like I said, it’s not mo why math. It’s the U.S.

I hate property taxes as well, but they do generate taxes from extremely wealthy people without them spending money or showing income - this is pretty much the main factor in keeping rich individuals/corporations from holding insane amounts of property for no reason.
Hence, why the billionaires want to get rid of it…

The poor agree with the billionaires.
Work your entire life to become a homeowner. And after 60 years, you still get a threatening notice to pay tax or vacate and start all over.

Congrats. Millions do these and you aren't special for buying a home.

What does 60 years matter in this scenario?
Are you still being provided fire, EMS, police, and other public works services while living in the house?
These services are not free...

Lol
The comment was simple.
Poor homeowners agree with the billionaires.
Waive your fist at them all you want.
Knock yourself out to your heart's content.
All I said was (and why) poor homeowners agree.

quote:You think renters are exempt?
That only land owners pay. Crock of shite
Believe it or not, landlords generally want to turn some level of profit from their rental units. So to do that, they set their rent prices at a rate that accounts for covering their expenses, which includes property taxes.

Maybe they don’t get you on property taxes, but they more than make up for it on income tax rates.
If we eliminate property taxes, the government would just make up the lost revenue from somewhere else….likely via increaed sales taxes.
