death toll has sadly risen to 22... and surely still to rise
also... an emergency order has been signed to demolish the rest of the building as soon as engineers are ready to do so (which may be a while still)

Our desire to pay for it has gotten worse.
Just look around.
At what? Buildings have been falling since buildings were first built. We have a lot more of them now then we’ve ever had before. That’s why there is more collapses. Do you have data that shows a higher percentage of 40 year old buildings are collapsing now then used to 20 years ago? Of course not; you’re just guessing off of anecdotal information.
I am also guessing, but my guess is based on the fact that building codes are much more stringent and inspections and maintenance are mandated much more.

What % of the rubble have they searched?
Seems premature

I absolutely have thoughts and prayers out to the family and loved ones of those in that mess that have yet to be found. They will have no joy on this holiday, let's us hope they have closure and peace soon.

This is likely being done as a safety concern for those working on recovery.

I’ve never liked the idea of skyscrapers built on sand.

Well, it’s looking like it’s the failure of the pool deck slab. Not sand foundation, assuming that sand was used as a part of the earthwork.

You really think someone is alive in there?

Yeah it’s recovery now. Not rescue.

I’m assuming they can drop it on itself so no.
But in regards to suspending the search, I’m assuming someone was behind the scenes realistic and originally was hoping to find survivors. After this much time and effort in realizing there’s not really any gaps a survivor could be, they did another risk analysis for the search and rescue.

There’s no one left to die. If anyone managed to survive the collapse but hasn’t been rescued, by now they’ve succumbed to dehydration.

NBC 6 South Florida @nbc6
Miami-Dade Assistant Fire Chief Raide Jadallah told family members that rescuers stopped their search at about 4 p.m., when demolition crews began boring holes into the concrete of the still-standing portion of Champlain Towers South in Surfside.
ETA: since they're boring holes into concrete... I guess they're going with implosion instead of wrecking ball to take down the rest of the building
this is absolutely small potatoes... and believe me I absolutely know and understand why... but it still kinda sucks the residents of the still standing portion won't be able to save some important items (pictures/documents/heirlooms) before their home is dropped to the ground

Demolition set for Sunday night (tonight)
Presser at 1:30pm this afternoon to announce specific time.
They may have let folks into the lower floors, but I agree, that we have to really feel for the survivors who will see their lives blown up and find themselves left with their pajamas, and darned little else to remember this part of their lives.

The death toll was up to 24, with 120 unaccounted for, when they halted the recovery in order to start preparing for the demo.
Just so sad and crazy. Hopefully the 'unaccounted for' numbers don't come to fruition and it's not 144 total dead
Prayers to all the families who were effected by this, especially those waiting in limbo with no closure yet

I don't see how it doesn't at this point though. Maybe at best there's some wacky resident that is using the event as an opportunity to walk away / fake their death.

No way they just find out 144 people have been missing for weeks and suddenly appear. That building flattened like a pancake, those people are dead. Prayers for them and their families, probably a terrible way to go
