Met lots of students from out of state in my time there, mostly from Texas. They said it was cheaper paying out of state than in state at A&M or UT.
These are the rates for today:
UT- Austin estimate for instate living on campus: $32,344-$35,152
TAMU estimate for instate living on campus: $30, 574
LSU Non-resident: $44,552

Twenty years ago it was cheaper
But most of the Texas baws that go to LSU either couldn’t get into the Texas school of their choice or just wanted to go to LSU instead

I never understand why people say that. I've made a very detailed spreadsheet and its twice as much out of state. Unless they waive out of state it's not even close. Not to mention the cost of travel to and from and family visiting over 4/5 years.

quote:yeah - the numbers are out there -it was about $3000 cheaper to stay in Texas if a Texas resident living on campus than to come to LSU with out of state tuition and living on campus

$3000 isn’t much of a difference for a lot of people.

Has anyone ever not been accepted to LSU? I’ve never met one.

Another question if so many kids can’t get into A&M or UT…where is Texas Tech in the equation? I would assume Tech is on par or even better than LSU.

quote:Yup. So many Dots in the state and they (UT) were practicing DEI admissions that it has gotten to e damned difficult for a normal kid to get into UT. Maybe that's changed since the no-DEI in admissions policy of the state that started last year. But according to this thread it's still difficult.
they only accept the top 5% of each Texas high school’s grads

Tech is the place to go if you want to study petroleum engineering.

The majority (almost 60%) of OOS to LSU do not per ChatGPT:
Out-of-state LSU students:
• ~44% get major LSU merit scholarships
• ~56% do not
Did it give a source to see what years were referenced and how much need based scholarships or grants were handed out? I don’t currently use ChatGPT.
LSU’s website has a lot of data, but it almost looks like someone new is running this particular area every couple of years. My previously saved links don’t always include the current years. Just like ACT scores are not always reporting the exact same score historically sometimes student numbers include online students and duel credit, and sometimes they don’t.
Sometimes a report on freshmen will include anyone under the set number of hours regardless of the amount of time at LSU or another university which isn’t inaccurate but is problematic when you try to compare some reporting for freshmen to first time first year freshman admissions just out of high school in the fall.
Sometimes LSU press releases or articles right at the start of a fall semester will contain pre-census numbers and be based on deposited numbers.
I don’t always find an AI’s search summary or answer helpful, but the links to sources can help clear things up as far as being on the same page as my intention with my search or not.
The most recent financial aid report I found was from the Fall of 2024 and actually covered the prior year 2023-2024 - https://www.lsu.edu/data/common-data-set/2024/8_2425_finaid.pdf
I am also looking for some of the fall 2025 data that was reported for fall 2024 incoming freshmen under the common data set like below - https://www.lsu.edu/data/common-data-set/2024/3_2425_admissions.pdf
Fall 2024 FIRST-TIME, FIRST-YEAR ADMISSION
quote:
Total first-time, first-year who applied 47065
Total first-time, first-year who were admitted 34513
Total first-time, first-year who enrolled 7925
Submitting SAT Scores 7% 569
Submitting ACT Scores 40% 3,194
For anyone here is link to some of dashboard reporting- https://www.lsu.edu/data/student-data/index.php

The university is better than many people think even outside of petroleum engineering. In Texas I think only Tech and Texas have their graduate schools, their law schools, and their medical schools on their main campuses. I used to have to go to Lubbock for work some. It seemed like it could be a good college town, but I was just going by what some of the people I was working with showed me. Lubbock also always seemed like there was a layer of dirt covering it.
I think it’s about the location for many with Lubbock. College Station gets that some as well, but it is also maybe 2 hours from Austin, 2 hours to Houston (closer to suburban areas). 3 hours to San Antonio, and just over 3 to Dallas area.
With Lubbock you are about 2 hours to Amarillo. I drove to Lubbock once from Dallas area, and the scenery along the way was mostly a lot of dirt and wind turbines.
I think those who visit Tech and spend time with the students there like it, but without an existing connection many that I have known in various neighborhoods or in classes with our kids just don’t visit it. Others may like the campus and students better than they thought, but they just don’t like Lubbock. It’s the opposite end of a place like Fayetteville, AR.

This is the answer.
While we may think LSU is “woke” it’s ultra-conservative compared to northern schools.
These applicants are escaping to SEC country.
Not sure why LSU can’t recognize this, and take full advantage of it. Quit beating down the Greek system and put any remnants of DEI, social justice, etc, to bed.

What’s the racial demographic of applicants
A lot of mediocre black kids from out-of-state who couldn't get into their flagship public schools. The remedial classes at LSU will be filled to capacity mostly made up of them

My point was that with a 4.0, and a good resume, you can get in to any SEC school.
A 4.0 definitely doesn't get you into UT with 100% certainty. Maybe A&M as well.
Do note that schools in Texas have kids with GPAs above 4.0 where you get extra grade points if you take AP classes. I had like a 4.2 and solid SAT and still didn't get into UT in 02. Got into A&M.
UT is harder to get into now than in 02.

This would be because people from LA have fled their shithole of a state, but like liberals forget why they left that shithole and send their kids there to repeat those mistakes.
It’s more of a simple economic decision. Out of state tuition to SEC schools are cheaper than instate in the New England. There’s hundreds of schools and good luck finding any that are less than $50k. Then you have the private schools that can be $150k year. There’s a halves and halves not eduction system. There’s a large number of college prep schools that charge 30-80/yr for high school. Those students are hanging around. The kids in public schools are hanging on for dear life when it comes to entrance.

This can only be good news if Rouse is instituting the old application rules and ACT requirements that Tate fricked all up.
I have not heard of any changes. Since some early applications and offers may have already been extended for 2026 by the time the new guys took over I was thinking they might be handcuffed for the fall of 2026, but I was hoping we would hear about changes to what you mentioned for 2027 and maybe at least try to make changes for 2026 applicants and offers after a set date. I still haven’t seen anything yet.

Garbage in garbage out
Big part of this is likely universal application, you can hit up 20 schools. Helps schools pad their stats.

Son was raised as LSU fan while we lived in Ms. (I was raised in Slidell)
Dream was to go to LSU but even after being star student, val and 4.2 gpa he was basically offered nothing.
Got full ride offers to multiple colleges but nothing from LSU
Broke my heart but not my bank account for him to go to Ole Miss.
He was really sick about it but guess they dont need anymore rednecks in the class.

On track to be another Tulane.
Tulane University students come from a wide range of locations, both within the U.S. and internationally.
**83.51% of students are from out of state, making Tulane one of the most geographically diverse universities in the country.
**The university ranks 56th out of 2,183 for geographic diversity.
**Students are enrolled from 43 U.S. states (including Washington D.C.), with the largest numbers coming from New York, Louisiana, California, New Jersey, and Illinois.
**0.22% of students are from outside the U.S., representing 92 countries.
**The majority of international students come from China, India, and Canada.
