Congrats. I retired 6 years ago at 54. I have 50% more than when I retired. My boys will be surprised when I kick it.

Sorry to disappoint you but I don’t have a tattoo. I’d say I am upper middle class but hesitate to retire until the kids are out of school. I’m paying all their expenses and they’re talking about going to grad school. It is what it is. I could retire now and certainly could when my inheritance comes but I continue to work for the kids. I want to pass on as much as possible.

Sometimes, people seem perfectly normal until they are put under real stress for the first time in their lives. Kids were the trigger in our marriage. I ended up with custody and they don’t have tattoos either. I hope I set a good example for them by never speaking ill of their mother and including her in family events like graduations.

Congrats on the next chapter of your life That says a lot about your character that you remained at the same job for so long. Certainly a rarity there days.

So people that leave because company is only willing to pay a fraction of their market value don't have character.

Companies lacked loyalty to the employees long before the employees lost their loyalty to the company.

It will take six months before you realize that your free.

Took me -30 days. Free feeling came before retirement.

That same feeling shows up on Sundays when I otherwise would have been planning week of mtgs, projects and travel.

Freedom / control of one’s time is nothing short of incredible.

Congrats Slim. I'm close. The government says that I reach "full retirement age" in May. Who am I to argue with the government?

Oh great a boomer brag thread

Make sure you pull the ladder up the rest of the way
I’m sure had you been born in 1960, you’d be much different than those Boomers you despise.

You’d have long since given away all your savings and had the good form to have died to not take anything more from the system and to not hold a job that should go to a younger person.

Congratulations!

A word of advice. Stay active. If you don’t have a hobby, get one. Too many people retire to the couch and essentially are stuck their the reminder of their life.

Congrats! Enjoy your retirement, you've earned it.

@BKLounge retirement even early retirement has been more achievable for Gen X than generations before us. No other generation had such easy access to low cost investments and knowledge at our fingertips not to mention expanded access to educational opportunities. I mostly retired at 45 and only work a little by choice. Living below means and investing early is they key. Lack of opportunities isnt what holds most Americans back it it their rampant over consumption and poor life choices.
