Met ole Lou in the Monroe airport some years ago. It was about 5am and I was trudging through security half asleep. Kept hearing some guy up ahead of me talk that sounded just like Lou Holtz. I remeber thinking, damn, some dude lisps just like Lou Holtz. Get thru security and lo and behold there is Lou grabbing bags and putting his shoes on. He, Rece Davis, and Mark May. Ended up sitting next to May (who is as tall as me and we didn't fit well at all) and across the aisle from Lou. That sumbitch talked the whole flight. When May finally put in ear buds and retired to a magazine Lou turned his attention to me and talked my head off about various things. Super nice guy. CSB RIP in peace Lou.

Legit cool story, bruh

I was pulling into the grocery store right when they announced it about an hour ago.

As luck would have it a guy with several Notre Dame stickers on his Lexus SUV pulled in next to me.

I said "Notre Dame fan huh?"

He said "Yeah"..

I said "Lou Holtz just died". and kept walking.

The look on his face. was priceless. You would have thought I kicked his dog.

It made my day.

What sucks is my shitty arse university never did anything to honor the man while he was alive. No buildings named for him, no statue of him, nothing around the stadium named for him, never invited him back so the fans could clap and scream for him. If anyone can frick shite up it’s USC. Now it’s too late. I’m begging the team on social media to put a sticker on their helmets for the man this year but we’ll see.

any particular reason they should have done that? don't normally get those things for a 33-37 record(or whatever it was)

That’s a great idea! I’m sure there will be plenty of recognition once everybody gets organized…

Holtz took us and won our best bowl games we’d ever been to, back to back against some really good Ohio state teams. If you only knew how bad we were before he got here. Holtz is the reason we even ended up with Spurrier.

During Coach Holtz's introductory press conference when he was introduced as the University of Minnesota's new head football coach:

Reporter: "Coach Holtz, will you make it a priority to recruit Minnesota high school football players?"

Coach Holtz: "Minnesota recruits will always be the heart and soul of our program!" (Crowd goes wild cheering...)

Coach Holtz: "But if we need some arms and legs, we'll recruit from out of state..."

College Football Final with these 2 was peak CFB for me. I would stay up to watch.

College Football Final with Lou Holtz and Mark May was mortifying and unwatchable to me, but that's probably I wasn't a kid. Whatever was happening in college football when you were a kid, that will always be peak college football, because of the magic of childhood.

As a college football fanatic I appreciated him and he really is a CFB legend, but that son of a bitch was something. I never liked ND so I automatically didn't like him..

I met him when I was in high school. Despite being a small man, he had a larger than life presence. He will be missed in the football world.
