That moment where he says to Cole “you can drive through it, I know it, I know it in my heart” always reminds me of the way I’ve felt about things in life.

In memory of one of the greatest movie sequences ever.
Pretty amazing choreography and effects for the time.
Summed up the pure madness of that conflict.
My favorite part is the absolute disregard for nearby exploding mortar fire by the character, and the absolute disbelief from the other soldiers.

Duval did a great late career flick called "Second hand Lions" that you do not hear much about

If you haven't seen Broken Trail it's a great watch. My 2nd fav Duvall role only behind Gus Mcrae!

Last year in an interview he was asked what acter he disliked the most. Robert Redford because, Duvall said, Redford was deliberately messing with him during several scenes causing him to screw up his lines. When he confronted Redford, who was known for this, Redford replied :"Robert, you're a character acter, I am a movie star." Redford was apparently widely disliked by his peers.

Gene Hackman, Dustin Hoffman, and James Caan were his classmates at the Neighborhood Playhouse School of Theatre in NYC.
That had to be one of the most successful classes ever.

I’m sure it’s a great movie, but I can’t watch anything with Tess Harper.
