either; this sounds like a bullshite charge laid out by political enemies. What else would you discuss at a community forum if not "public business".

This seems like BS:

quote:

Five members of the Prince William Board of County Supervisors violated Virginia’s Freedom of Information Act when they attended a police department meeting called in the wake of a Manassas protest against the police killing of George Floyd in 2020 without complying with statutory public disclosure requirements, the Virginia Supreme Court held Thursday.

The meeting that sparked the case was a gathering of about 60 community members, faith leaders and elected officials – including the five supervisors as well as former delegate Lee Carter, who was involved in a May 30, 2020, protest following Floyd’s death.

Prince William County residents B. Alan Gloss, Tammy Spinks and Carol Fox alleged the police department meeting was illegal because the public wasn’t notified and because the three Republican county supervisors – Jeanine Lawson, R-Brentsville; Yesli Vega, R-Coles; and former supervisor Pete Candland, R-Gainesville – were not told about the meeting and did not attend.

The lawsuit alleged public business was discussed at the meeting because the police department officials gave their account of the police response to the protest, which began peacefully and then turned violent.

Police declared the protest an unlawful assembly after some demonstrators threw rocks and other items at officers and into the crowds.

Not a single internal candidate applied or was qualified? That’s the story in this. It says a lot.
the people (no pun intended) hell bent on ruining NOLA are not from there - the people in NOLA know they have no control - look at the voter turnout - they just don’t care bc it doesn’t matter

Kirkpatrick at least has big city experience in Memphis and Oakland. Her getting forced out in Oakland could have been political, without knowing more about it. None of the others give me any reason to think they can handle the problems in New Orleans.

Could be true. Another article says that Chief Kirkpatrick clashed with the police civilian oversight board that voted to fire her. A jury later found she was wrongfully terminated, and the city agreed to pay her $1.5 million.

I actually trained with her for 3 months back in 2000 at the FBINA. She was impressive back then.

Why would anyone apply when the mayor has said she wanted the incumbent, and said that she wants to be the first mayor of New Orleans to appoint a black female police chief!?
Additionally, Latoya only has 2 years left!

It’s a sham. Windowdressing.

We all know who it will be-
Woodfork

And maybe that’s fine but don’t insult people’s intelligence or waste people’s time

Well, it could be worse I assume. Ricky Boudreaux could be a candidate and show in to take over New Orleans.

What realistically does the Council do?

They see the setup and can reject Woodfrick when she is brought in front of them.

Woodfrick continues to be interim while this parade of frickups one by one gets shot down. Teedy will of course scream racism to a majority minority council until some sort of deal is struck.

Meanwhile, she gets her pick for all intents and purposes.

Longrun, do you frick up the system for future Mayors to come in order to deal with this mayor? It's like passing common sense laws/ordinances only to realize you are dealing with illogical people.

1)Thedrick Andres -- Andres has been out of work since retiring at the end of February as chief in the Las Vegas suburb of Henderson, in the wake of a “no confidence” vote last November from the Henderson Police Officers Association and Henderson Police Supervisors Association. The unions accused both Andres, who served 3 years and 9 months as chief, and his predecessor LaTesha Watson (who brought him with her from Arlington as deputy chief), of not sticking by collective bargaining agreements.

2)DeShawn Beaufort -- Beaufort, 45, reportedly was a candidate in recent years for police chief jobs in Miami and Kansas City. He tentatively rose to the No. 3 job of Chief Inspector for the Philadelphia Police Department late in 2020, but The Philadelphia Inquirer reported Beaufort was involved in a road-rage incident with a civilian motorist while off duty in February 2021 in Bucks County (Pa.), which wound up costing him that promotion and caused him to be reassigned out of internal affairs.

3)David Franklin -- Franklin has more than 26 years of law enforcement experience, most recently a 13-month stay as Director and Chief of Staff for the Albuquerque Police Department. In that role in New Mexico’s largest city, Franklin was to “oversee special projects, building and planning, fiscal, human resources and staffing, as well as working closely with City Council,” according to an APD spokesperson. Franklin was said to be from Dallas and previously served as a uniformed trooper, lieutenant and captain with the Texas Department of Public Safety. He was a finalist for a chief job in Aurora, Colo., before withdrawing his name from consideration last October.

4)Anne Kirkpatrick -- Kirkpatrick, 63, has spent more than 38 years in law enforcement with eight agencies, starting with her native Memphis Police Department. Kirkpatrick was sworn in as the first female police chief in Oakland (Calif.) in February 2017, but was fired three years later after being accused of making false statements about a police raid during her first year in office. Kirkpatrick countered by filing a federal whistleblower lawsuit against the city, claiming she actually was terminated in retaliation for not reimbursing an Oakland police commission member for towing fees.

5) Jarad Phelps -- Phelps has more than 27 years of experience with the Prince William County Police Department in Virginia, including a stint as deputy chief for the past 3 years and 9 months, according to an online resume. According to the Northern Virginia newspapers website insidenova.com, the Virginia Supreme Court in May found Phelps and other officials violated the state’s Freedom of Information Act by discussing “public business” at a 2020 community forum following protests related to the police killing of George Floyd in Minnesota, because the gathering did not comply with public meeting requirements. Phelps was a finalist in April 2022 in a search for the new police chief of Irving, Texas.

By the end of the year, the force will be down to 800 officers.
Of those, there are rookies, office cops, homeless patrol, and others not involved in actually solving or preventing criminal activity.
Of those that are policing the streets, you’ve got a group who are engaged in their own criminal activity (prostitution, shakedowns, drugs etc). Then you have cops just mailing it in. Biding their time before they retire and collect pensions.

Actual effective policing headcount is probably less than 200 in a city of @300,000 with a growing criminal base.

The next chief needs to be exceptionally well qualified. Someone who has experience changing morale, growing a police force, and dealing with a Consent Decree as well as showing an effective diminution of crime as a Chief.

Woodwork has had some success but the overall road ahead is long and filled with pot holes.

Citizens of New Orleans will just have to wait 2 years before a new mayor can come in and appoint their own candidate.

This whole search is just a sham so Teedy can say the committee did a thorough screening and it wasn't her that picked Woodfork as Chief......because she is going to be the Chief!
Teedy won't be bullied or follow the stupid councils rules.

This is the dilemma that places like Baton Rouge face with hiring a qualified school superintendent. No one wants to ruin their career in a shithole.

Exactly

Any good & decent person would want NO part of NO and Teedy's shite show.

Surprised Murphy Paul aint on the list.

Figured Destoya would love to have an equally incompetent person to share a drink and bang with.

I figured Vappie would be the dark horse on the list.

What about the temporary superintendent right now?

Is she not making a dent in crime right now and checks off a few DEI boxes to make her a permanent choice?

One of them killed someone off duty after getting off a party bus

quote:

Thedrick Andres Sr. claimed he fatally shot Juan May in self-defense, after insults flew on a party bus, then fists flew in a restaurant parking lot. Andres was accused of hurling a homosexual slur, which he has denied.

May struck Andres first, in the face, after they’d stepped off the party bus, court records show. Andres then fought with Juan May’s cousin, Patrick May, ending up on the ground before he scurried to his car for a gun.

Juan May, 45, ran after him, and Andres fired into his chest, killing the father of three, who had served in the U.S. Marine Corps and worked for Harvey Gulf International Marine, according to his family's lawsuit.

The last three candidates all seem decent

You'll be hard pressed to find high level PD staff from big cities these days without some negative press. It's the nature of the beast and political landscape now. People are picking apart your every move trying to fire you.

This guy doesn't sound terrible. Maybe a little light on experience running a big department.

If it’s one of these 5, my money is on number 1 or 2. Number 1 probably wins with his record though.
