He is in Lysychans'k in extreme eastern Ukraine.

I’d say he has a 8-9 on the 10 point pucker factor.
Get out man, don’t want to be trapped with a baby in some weird USSR block type situation.

I left Ukraine Sunday. My wife and baby are still there.
People in Ukraine are still convinced Russia will not invade, including my wife. I hope she is correct.

What kind of man leaves his wife and baby behind to face invasion from one of the evilest empires in the world?

We go to Ukraine every year. My wife stays longer than I do to spend time with her son who lives there and her parents.
We purchased the plane tickets in Nov., left for Ukraine in Dec. The plan was for me to return to the states in feb., come back to Ukraine in June and all of us to leave together in Sept.
She is wanting a second child and is doing the IVF there as well as getting some crowns on her teeth.
We didn't take the war talk very seriously when we made the plans. Even now in Ukraine, the are going out for pizza, going to school, work, shopping basically living their normal lives.
As the war talk became more serious, I was hoping something would be resolved before I left. The night before I was scheduled to fly out, I started having serious reservations about leaving as the war talk became more serious, at least in the US.
If Russian invades, I might regret my decision to leave. If Russia doesn't invade, I made the correct decision.
The reality is I needed to come back and take care of my finances. After a six week vacation in Ukraine, funds were running out.
My biggest fear is the initial bombing and she has actually been through that before in 2014. Her parents have a rural house with a cellar, that is well supplied. I believe she will be safe there. If she evacuates, she will need money. I loaded the checking account and she has been making ATM withdrawals stacking up on cash. If I would have stayed, she would not be able to evacuate with an american citizen through Russian road blocks. I don't know that for sure, but I would say that interrogation would be likely for her and me. I have no idea how that would go.
I would have preferred if she would have left with me, but that wasn't going to happen. Now I'm hoping they don't invade. If they do, she will either hunker down with the parents or evacuate.

You're in a shite sandwich.
Could the embassy help you out? Maybe give them a call?

I understand what you are saying but it is not that simple. If I knew Russia was going to invade, I felt I could stay behind and protect my family, of course I would stay. The reality is that Russia invading is being hyped by the american media but not so in Ukraine. They laugh when you ask them about it.
If I stay, we run out of funds. If they invade, my wife and her family are now harboring an american.
If you knew me, you would understand that this has nothing to do with being a coward. I didn't leave out of fear for my personal safety.
I made the decision to not alter my original plans. Did I make the correct decision, that I don't know yet.

Nothing for the embassy to do. The wife is not concerned at all and I had to make her stock up on baby supplies. Just two weeks ago, the Ukrainian government website was encouraging tourist to still visit.
If they invade, it will probably end quickly. She will then be under Russian control. Half the Ukrainians in that area are actually pro Russian. I don't expect there will be many war crimes. My bigger fear is collateral damage. The parents are in a rural area and bombing there would be unlikely. They are well supplied, jarred food, farm animals, water well, etc. The parents are Doctors and so was the wife when she lived there. They are well connected and probably could evacuate if they decided to. My guess is they will just stay put. I believe they will be safe but it would be quite miserable honestly. They will be cramped in a tiny house and if they lose internet and utilities it would just suck.

Keep us posted on what's going on in Ukraine. The American media is beating the war drums. They are itching for Russia to invade.
