They are just softening up air defenses and command and control targets right now with stand off weapons. Once that’s taken out they will send in the Air Force to start hitting bases and armor. Then the Army will work it’s way in.

Jesus Christ. The Iraqi Republican Guard was a more formidable opponent in 1991 than the current Ukrainian military and that conflict was over by the end of the first hour when we knocked out Iraqi radar in the opening wave. Everything else was just shooting fish in a barrel.
If Putin needs to “soften up” Ukraine, Russia won’t stand a chance against NATO.

I hope you got out, sorry we are too big of pussies to give you tactical nukes or take out the Russian military with our advance military weapons. But fear not we will be paying for our stupidity with 5 dollar a gallon gas soon.

I just spoke with my wife. It is 8 hours later there, so it was about 1030am for them. She can hear the bombing about every 15 minutes for the last several hours. She said nothing is hitting too close to her.
I returned to the states on Feb. 13th. That was the airline ticket I bought in Nov with no knowledge of the timing of all this. The timing turned out to be pretty shitty. If Russia is going to roll tanks in, I would much rather be there. The night before I left, I had to decide if Russia was actually going to invade or not and if I should get on the plane, hence this thread was started.
Every person I asked in Ukraine, would laugh and say Russia won't invade, we are like brothers. Keep in mind, this is East Ukraine, Lisichansk. I never felt as confident as them, but we were running out of money and I had some medical and lawyer stuff to take care of, so I ultimately decided to get on the plane. I would also need a visa to stay, since as an american I can only stay 90 days out of 180.
Last week I started working on my visa, so I can go back if war broke out. I was able to find some good plane tickets to go back in March. My original plans were to go back in June. Now the airports are closed and I might have to fly into Poland and see if it is even possible for me to make it into Lisichansk. Normally transportation would be by train or bus and I believe those are shut down as well.
The wife for her part is not concerned. Just yesterday her son went to school, parents went to work and she jarred baby food to stock up. She is still talking about getting her dental work done, and IVF in Kiev in March.
I asked her why she didn't leave when I asked her to. (Keep in mind she never believed Russia would invade). Her response was "everything is okay". She still believes the dentist will be open, IVF in Kiev will be open. I asked her how she planned on going to Kiev in March with a war going on. Her response was "I went in 2020 when everyone was dying of covid. It was dangerous then, but now I have a baby."
She then told me it was good that I left. I asked her "Why? I told you I wanted to be there if Russia invades" She said, I was an american and left it at that.
So here I am, going crazy in the states without my family. I am not even sure what to say at this point. At least I was able to communicate with her. I have no idea, how I will be able to get there to them and now that Russia has invaded, I wish I would have stayed. The only good news is there really isn't any need for bombing or fighting where she is. It is just a residential community and the city is of no military value. The bombing she is hearing is probably the city next to them about 30 minute drive.

quote:I thought you were crazy not to get your family out when you originally asked the question. I won’t beat u up on that sounded like your wife and her family didn’t want to leave their home anyway and I can’t blame them either to a point. All I can do is pray for you and your family and Ukraine. I have seen people on this site do some incredible things through the years. Maybe we can once again find some contacts in Eastern Europe that will be able to help either get back in there or get your family out. Again prayers to you.

As of now the wife has no intentions of leaving.

I really don’t want to say this but everything that has transpired was incredibly obvious to us outside observers.
I’m only saying this because if there is another chance you have to intervene I hope you are more strong willed.
Your wife seems incredibly irrational and you seem to have just accepted it. If I was you I would tell my wife exactly what she will do next. Saying my wife won’t leave is not an excuse. You have every right to not want your young child in a war zone. It’s absurd to think otherwise. Your wife should be respected but there is a time and a place to be a man and tell her exactly what she is going to do with no exceptions or you will take your baby out of there. There isn’t a god damn person who would blame you for taking your baby away from your wife and out of a potential war zone if she won’t leave.

I understand where you are coming from, but this isn't exactly a normal marriage. The whole 90 day bride thing is a different ball game. I understood from the beginning that she would be spending a lot of time there with her son and parents. I know she seems irrational to you, but everyone I spoke to in Ukraine laughed at the thought of Russia invading. People have a tendency to believe propaganda for whatever stupid reason. As if the governments of this world are always honest with us. The Russia media was saying they have no intention to invade. The Ukrainian government was still trying to get tourist to visit and calling the American government down for stoking the fear. The American government wants to distract americans from there own blunders at home.
Keep in mind, Ukraine has been trying to join NATO for years, so why do they all of a sudden want to invade? Why not 4 years ago?
So I asked myself, if I ignore all the propaganda by all these lying governments and just look at the facts. Putin has had troops there for months and could have invaded months ago. He is obviously stalling, negotiating and really doesn't want to invade. Invading will hurt Putin and Russia. Russia will not only hurt economically, but the world will turn on them now. The Russian population will eventually turn on him. Wait until Russian soldiers start dying, economics suffer, innocent civilians start dying (they like Ukrainians) and the war never ends, similar to Afghanistan.
I thought surely Putin is smart enough to not actually attack? This is a thought shared by most East Ukrainians, its not an irrational thought. Do I think my wife was silly for taking the chance? Yes, I do, but once again our marriage is not exactly built like a normal marriage. The thing that I lose the most sleep over is my baby. I am very attached to that child. As an older parent your values are different and you appreciate different.
I would sleep a lot better if the baby was here with me, but that was never the plan. Her sister, who moved to Russia when the war started in 2014 and also just delivered a baby. The plan was that her sister would also go to Ukraine for several months and the families would spend time together.
As of now Russians are not allowed to visit. If they shut down the IVF center in Kiev there won't be much reason for her to stay besides spending time with her son. Perhaps they will let her son leave as a refugee without a visa and her parents for that matter.
Nothing is as simple as it sounds. At this moment my wife still doesn't regret her decision and lets hope it stays that way. I am the only one regretting my decision. If I knew Russia would actually invade, I wouldn't have left.
Right now I have to figure out how to get back, against her wishes. I will make some calls to the embassy, but I'm doubting they will have any answers. I can fly to Warsaw and see if I can find someone to drive me in.

I think it is actually safer there. Half the people there would rather be under Russian rule. Their standard of living has only worsened since 2014. Most of the factories are closed and things are more expensive.
Most of the civilian casualties will come in the big cities of Kharkiv and Kiev, especially Kiev.

Can confirm. I have a few close friends that decided to stay and they literally laughed every time I asked if they were concerned. I don't think Russia or Ukraine thought it would ever get to this point.
