Am I crazy because I don't really care about eclipses and other celestial events? I mean if it went overhead I would take a look but I can't see myself travelling to see it.

In 2017, one of the commentators on ESPN, Jemele Hill, said that the solar eclipse was racist because only white people cared.

I'm on the 95%/100% line. That's as close as I'm getting.

I was close to the last one 6 years ago, but not in the path of totality. I looked up when the next close one would be happening and began planning to get myself and my family in the path of totality that day.

My in laws live in a small town ( 1 street light in the county) that is smack in the middle of the path. They are working on a plan but fear it's too late. They had a rep from another town that suffered under the last eclipse in to give them guidance. When you have one hotel one grocery store and a couple restaurants....it doesn't take many extra people to create chaos

Grandma drove us all the way to Georgia to view the 1970's total solar eclipse.

My big memory is that migratory birds went nuts and flew in circles.

And it was a long frigging time for a kid to ride in a car for such a short event.

I live in the path so I could just see it from home, but my deer lease is also on the path and I imagine a better spot to see it from than a major city. Will likely plan on the lease but let the weather make the final call.

Why?
maybe because of the subject of this thread?

Wasn't the one in '84 total? It got kinda dark at the World's Fair in the middle of the day.

Yep-

Its path went directly over south Louisiana.

It was a total eclipse, not sure why you were downvoted.

How could this do anything to these small towns other than boost the local economies by more people (i.e. tourists) being there and gassing up, eating, buying shite, etc.

My brother's inlaws have a big ranch outside Fredericksburg ,Texas and he has been worried about the influx of people for the last 2 years.

Drove to Tennessee for the last one and it is definitely worth it if you can get in the path of totality.

My friends and co-workers who stayed in Huntsville where it was about 95% say it is not worth it at that point.

Can we just drive down and sit in your driveway?

Real question- how is it if you are outside the path of totality? Partial eclipse?

"People are going to be coming here from all over the world," Jim Sweat, captain of the Richland County Sheriff's Office, told the group of leaders. "They're going to leave Richland County and they don't care what's happened."

What a freaking defeatist attitude.

You know what comes with tourism??? MONEY. Find ways to get them to spend it.

You see the amount of people at the Glastonbury Music Festival in the UK? They worried about crowds?
Hell no. They want you to come and bring money.
