That's terrible news. The Cajun Nationals were awesome.
No Problem Raceway is a nice facility, but a terrible location. Need something on the I-12 corridor.
Gulfport Dragway isn't the nicest, but it's constantly packed with events and participants.
Again, we need an Auto Board.

Was there the night Fat Rat Russell attempted the jump of cars. Seen Barron Von Crain and his Jet Cars. In my younger days we did the machinist work on a many of race cars, boats, motorcycles, etc.
Graham Brothers was also involved in many of the race motors.
Then Insurance Wrecking, had a car, Standard Motor Car company had Clyde Robillard.
We did Boat motors for Jim’s Wheel Alignments, Rob Herrington. Another boat, Shazam, Prevost Car Dealership.

I wish I could remember, I am going to have to ask my cousin to see if he remembers, but it seemed like it was a summer thing. At that age I am sure anything I was doing was fun, but I remember it being pretty fun when we went.

A buddy of mine and I used to bring whatever Mustang he had at the time and run them on the test and tune weekends.
Had a blast meeting up with a group of motorheads from Hammond and then we'd all go hit The Gold Club on the way home.
Great times

LSUDad, you and I shave discussed this topic before. It was one of my first jobs I had as a teenager. I too was there when FatRat came up short on his jump. Also, the night Butch Orand lost his life in the MaxiTaxi.
A lot of names, many retired, some passed on.
Shame to see it all go away.

It's criminal how many dragstrips and race courses we lost in SoCal over the years.

I don't know how long Gulfport Dragway will stay around. Civilization is creeping in around it.

Did you ever see Jungle Pam Hardy?

No doubt, too many folks I still keep in contact with. Talked with one this morning. The stories I could tell.
How so many of those folks took other jobs, moved on in life. One of my friends still has about 15 dirt bikes.
My cousin at 59 years old still races motocross.

Sad day indeed. My dad raced this track in the 80’s, Chevy II on Saturday nights. They had a couple of other folks from my hometown (Eunice) that would race there as well. Also went to the Cajun Nationals a few times. It was awesome and always on Memorial Day weekend. Joe Amato was favorite Top Fuel back then. Also loved the Snake and Mongoose showdowns in Funny Car.

It got to be a very expensive “hobby” for those weekend racers. If you didn’t have a big sponsor, work in a shop or have a big wallet, it was hard to make it through a season or compete against those that did.
Saw many guys drive their car to the track, pull their street tires off, open the exhaust, race, then un-do everything and drive it back home.
Always had respect for those guys.

No doubt, now, lots of memories.

My 1st memory there was monster trucks in early '80's. It was awesome as a 7-8 year old. We had never seen anything like that.

I drove my uncle’s el Camino there one weeknight. I was driving an 85mph car against a 135mph car, so he had to spot me about 11 seconds. Everything was cool until I realized he was going to be going 50 mph faster than me as he passed me in the lights. Scared the crap out of me and I never did it again.

Born and raised 2 miles from it

I went to the NHRA Cajun Nationals several times back in the 80’s.
Fun times for sure.
