That looks like 80% of Texas

We should expect more
I think you missed the point. The “American dream” is people from any walk of life can have the opportunity to improve their status of life.
The pic you link looks like paradise for a large portion of the underdeveloped world. Now if you were born in that picture and haven’t improved your status of life, well that’s on you.

Looks like affordable housing

The real problem is thinking that suburban sprawl can just continue unabated.
The real problem is us thinking this is an exclusively American thing. At the very least, American sprawl usually attempts to create a more interesting experience than what is pictured in the OP. Sometimes that entails eating up more land and sprawling more than it would have if it created the truly soul-less sprawl you see skirting almost any European city. Go look at suburban housing in the UK and prepare to cry. It’s more depressing than a hole in the ground.

Went from 5k sqft cookie cutter house and sold it for a shitty house on 20 acres. I can't wait to build a new house on the 20 acres but it's still the best decision we've made.

Show what an average street in Mexico looks like, then this looks like heaven.

Little boxes on the hillside
Little boxes made of ticky-tacky
Little boxes on the hillside
Little boxes all the same
There's a pink one and a green one
And a blue one and a yellow one
And they're all made out of ticky-tacky
And they all look just the same
Another suburban family morning
Grandmother screaming at the wall
We have to shout above the din of our Rice Krispies
We can't hear anything at all
Mother chants her litany of boredom and frustration
But we know all her suicides are fake
Daddy only stares into the distance
There's only so much more that he can take
Many miles away
Something crawls from the slime
At the bottom of a dark
Scottish lake
Another industrial ugly morning
The factory belches filth into the sky
He walks unhindered through the picket lines today
He doesn't think to wonder why
The secretaries pout and preen like cheap tarts in a red light street
But all he ever thinks to do is watch
And every single meeting with his so called superior
Is a humiliating kick in the crotch
Many miles away
Something crawls to the surface
Of a dark Scottish loch
Another working day has ended
Only the rush hour hell to face
Packed like lemmings into shiny metal boxes
Contestants in a suicidal race
Daddy grips the wheel and stares alone into the distance
He knows that something somewhere has to break
He sees the family home now looming in his headlights
The pain upstairs that makes his eyeballs ache

Depends on who's building it.

Excess wealth and property/assest/possession accumulation that exceeds the actually utility of the asset.
We all have the freedom to accumulate as much as we want, and I believe we should always have that freedom. But just because we have the freedom, it doesn’t mean we shouldn’t use discretion. We don’t have to grotesquely exercise it in every situation, especially when it doesn’t serve anyone else good but us. It’s antagonistic to a true Christian way of life.
