Gonna be alot more of that if we keep clear cutting forests. Pretty much every Woodpecker species is on the decline.

Anything we can do to give cavity nesters more options we need to do it. If it is nothing more than a few Purple Martin gourds and Bluebird houses. Just keep the damn European Starlings and House Sparrows out of them.

Once corporations are forced to offset their "carbon footprint" they will be leasing timberland that will never get cut again.

I personally hope they lease up our hunting lease. Don't have to worry about the timber company ever again.

What's the solution? More money, higher taxes, more graft?

Actual forest management and preservation of existing wooded land. Effort by the general public to provide man-made nesting sites in areas that are clear cut.

Same people thought the same bird was extinct for about 75 years until some were spotted around SE LA about 15 years ago.

So grain of salt.

Always the usual suspects of pollution and habitat destruction, with dams being a big issue with them.

There were issues with overexploitation in the past because of harvest for pearls and the pearl-button industry.

In the late 80s I worked for a consulting engineering company in BR, and one of the projects I worked involved a fertilizer plant in the midwest, on a river, that was endangering a mussel species on the river banks with their phosphate discharge pipe.

The solution was to extend the discharge pipe to the middle of the river so less of the phosphates reached the banks.

Maybe they'd be alive if they didn't kill 60 of them for a picture.

Audubons journals mention a unique insight into this birds tenacity.
Audubon had started dozens of paintings while working in Oakley Plantation Louisiana, one was the Ivory Bill. Audubons “realistic” painting technique was achieved by only winging a bird, thus keeping it alive for several days. He retells a story that’s something like this.
that he had winged one of the Lord God Birds and it was mean ferocious and dangerous and it was stabbing him even in its wounded crippled state. Audubon was in awe of the birds willingness to maime him its ferocity and it’s survival instinct. After struggling with it and getting it back He manages to ties a rope around its leg and attaches it to a table in a room at Cabin or Inn in the woods possibly near present day Honey Island Swamp. (He lived temporarily in New Orleans) Audubon briefly leaves the room to run an errand and address his bleeding hands and arms when he returns he is shocked and in disbelief at what he sees.
the impressive Woodpecker has already cleanly sawn through the leg of the table, it’s collapsed on the floor shredded...
After freeing itself from table, it had drilled a massive hole clean through not only the interior wall of the Cabin but sizable chunks of the flooring was missing along with the exterior boards leaving chunks of wood across the room and a gapping hole. Audubon reacts quickly and just seconds before the beast can escape he grabs the rope pulls it back inside and redoubles his efforts as it’s stabbing while also cutting at the rope with precision. It destroyed the rooms wall All while still being a wounded bird. IvoryBillCall

Audubon was a principal in the original OSS. The Audubon Zoo was a CIA front, just like the clandestine faux Airline company they operated in and out Mesa, Arkansas but that’s another story.

There was actually an investigation NPR did about this. Their use case was Microsoft and Microsoft has said they won’t be looking at using the forest preservation leases going forward because it’s pretty much a sham market

And there's a reason why.

If you've ever had one nest in your yard, you're throwing an extinction party later today.

These birds are Britney Spears crazy. Constantly banging their heads into a tree, all day, every day. They probably died from CTE. Libtards want to shut down all of football to stop that, but do everything to help these nuisances.

Biologists haven't totally given up hope yet. There are audio recording devices set up deep in the forests in several locations across Louisiana still listening for them.

So you're saying Louisiana kept the species going longer than Georgia?

I wonder if scientists ever consider that maybe certain species are SUPPOSED to go extinct. What if it’s all part of nature’s plan?
