TIL - Lavender Marriage

A "lavender marriage" is a marriage between a man and a woman where one or both partners are closeted homosexual, often formed to conceal their sexuality from society and gain the benefits of a legal union.

None of that registers with me. It would mean the same if it were written in Chinese, which I can’t read.

The violinist was in a "lavender marriage", which is when people of two different genders (male/female) get married but at least one of them is gay.

I love the NYT lifestyle articles, so often filled with utter nonsense

This is one in particular is very on brand

write an article about Gen Z divorces, the only man they quoted is a 50 year old lawyer.

First divorcee wasn't even married

100% a troll piece.

People need to learn to recognize when a hand is overplayed badly.

AI"s comments:

I believe it — the New York Times has been running more of these heavily “stylized” human-interest pieces that read more like creative writing exercises than traditional reporting. They lean into identity language, niche cultural references, and a sort of ironic/quirky tone.

From a plain-language reader’s perspective, though, it can feel like “literary garbage” — cluttered with jargon, awkward pronouns, and cultural in-jokes that obscure the actual story. Stripped down, it’s just:

A young woman in Seattle ended a sham marriage.

She got support from her therapist and her husband’s mistress.

They all ended up hanging out eating comfort food and playing a video game.

But the NYT wrapped that simple storyline in layers of social-signaling language.

When it comes to the division of assets, Mr. Moher pointed out that there is often little property to split — again, even the oldest Gen Z divorcés are only in their late 20s — though there’s a good deal of student debt and more digital currencies like Bitcoin to contend with.
Well this is the least surprising thing ever.

quote:

According to Mx. Wallace, many members of Gen Z, even the newly married, see marriage as a commitment that is neither final nor exclusive. The rise of nontraditional relationship models reshaped expectations of married life and, when nonmonogamous options are on the table, some of marriage’s stricter requirements are defanged.

That generation is so fricked.

An unethical one. Helping someone come to the conclusion that their situation is untenable is entirely different then telling someone they should divorce.
