Sub $500 i'd say find a good Seiko or Citizen. Hard to beat those in that range IMO.

Seiko GMT or field series all day long in that price range for me.

Check Jomashop for good prices. Hamilton, higher end Seiko’s, Tissot would be your best bet in the $400-$600 range. You can get some nice microbrands like Christopher Ward/Farer if you double that budget to around 1k.

That is the look I like and what I am shooting for. Looks fairly thin....

Steinhart.
For about $500 you can get a very nice homage Rolex design that has a Swiss movement.
I’ve been very happy with mine.

I wore my Ocean 1 out. it was a great sub replica and had no problem beating it up. It kept great time. I'm now wearing an Orient until I can save for my Rolex.

If you're a man, G-Shock.

I think you should order a Laco. 42 or 39mm depending on your wrist size:

Cases and dials are very cool in that price range. Here’s one example:

I've found a nice, slightly used, Luminox Atacama about 8 years ago on eBay for $450. Tritium hands and waterproof 2-400meters. No issues with it and classy looking with a different band.

I keep a Rolex on my wrist in case I'm ever in a foreign country and I get kidnapped I'll have some bargaining position.

Seiko prospex sea turtle special edition. It’s filthy right now but it’s one of my favorite beat around watches because it was only $800 for the kit with stainless band if you want to dress it up and the rubber strap. They had blue, green, and a cola color when I got mine.

I don't hate Raymond weil on jomas in that range

Orient has in house movements. Their Mako line in it's many variations is hard to beat.

Check out Sheffield Allsport. Really nice looking automatic divers for under $200, IIRC.

I have this same one its a really great watch. Citizen is not expensive but I really have not had a complaint about any of the watches I have had from them.
