Have you read Mindfulness: A Practical Guide to Awakening? Another great teacher is Christopher Titmus.

I never read his books but i came across some of his lectures/ hour long talks on this meditation app i was trying out and listened to all of them I could find. Ill check our Christopher Titmus.. ive been thinking it would be eye opening to do a retreat. Have you done one?

Great testimony man.. i was definitely on the way to destroying my relationship with my wife and kids.. definitely felt like i was living under this enchantment and life was passing me by. From time to time i begin to deceive myself by thinking i can drink casually now that i have some time under my belt.. i think summoning images or events from the past when you were at rock bottom is a helpful snap back.

Burned my life down along with every bridge in it, buprenorphine, several treatment centers, getting plugged in, surrounding myself with people going through the same thing with constant accountability, lots of service work, and now here I am with about 17 mo clean

For me it was getting a sponsor through AA/NA. Was great talking to someone that had been through exactly what I was going through and had made it to the other side. I have spoken at meetings and always tell people that is what lets you know what you are thinking and going through body wise is a normal part of recovery. Found someone I could call any hour and had multiple years of sobriety.

I’ve never understood the allure of not being 100% or feeling like shite.

When people find out I don’t drink and immediately say, “I wish I didn’t drink.” I’ve always wondered why they do? What good thing does it do for people? I honestly don’t know.

Also, Trump doesn’t drink, and looks down on people that do pretty hard.

This misspelling reminds me of an employee of ours whose middle name was Joseph, only he wrote it on his insurance form as “Joeseph”. When someone pointed out that he had misspelled his own name he argued that Joe was spelled “Joe”, so…

He was only convinced when shown the name in a published document.

It must be extremely difficult for those who are hardwired for addiction. I know many people, including myself, who drank like a fish five nights a week for years
in college. Now, most of those are social drinkers at best or don’t drink at all. Some developed addiction.

Godspeed to those who struggle with that

Christopher Titmus is an Englishman who hitchhiked from London to Thailand in the late 60's, became a Thai Forest Monk for around 6 years, went to India, started teaching meditation, quit the monkhood, and has taught meditation around the world since. Gil Fronsdal is another one to check out.

I don't want to derail this thread, so I'll be brief. I've been to retreats with different teachers and you have to be careful. I avoid anything thing linked to anything esoteric. It is eye-opening. And challenging. And rewarding. You will (probably) be exposed to Buddhism, but nothing that would be uncomfortable to a Christian.

That casual drink is a first step, brother.

Same here!

I never liked the taste of beer. I didn't like the results of drinking booze.
So when I got married, almost 58 years ago, it wasn't a problem.

Not shocking. It is precisely how many, probably most, find sobriety (through other addicts or alcoholics).

I got tired of putting myself through hell. I got tired of putting my wife through hell. I got tired of disappointing people. I got tired of disappointing myself. I got tired of living a double life. I knew it was coming, and she gave me an ultimatum.

But add all those things together and it equals the one thing that did it. I wanted it.

Knowing that if I didn’t put the behavior behind me, I would just hand it to my son.

You can make the things on the outside look better, but if you aren't mentally better on the inside, everything on the outside is aesthetic.

Well, knowing people (one a good friend) who were found dead in their living rooms as a result of alcohol abuse could serve as a wake-up call. I vowed my wife would never suffer that, and she won't.
