For North Alabama, I'd guess the most famous case would be the Amy Bishop shooting at UAH. Bishop was a faculty member who was denied tenure, so she shot and killed three people and wounded several others. She had also shot and killed her brother in the past, but it was ruled an accident.
Another famous case from a couple of years ago was the Casey White escape. A female prison guard, Vicky White, broke him out of jail and went on the run for a couple of weeks. She killed herself when the pair was captured.

On February 12, 2010, University of Alabama in Huntsville (UAH) biology professor Amy Bishop shot and killed three colleagues and wounded three others during a department meeting. The victims were G.K. Podila, Maria Ragland Davis, and Adriel D. Johnson Sr.. Bishop, a neurobiologist, was denied tenure and opened fire during the meeting, later receiving a life sentence.
I remember listening to the radio news and they were interviewing the step daughter of one of the victims. She stated that she had tried to call her step mom but her step mom hadn't answered yet, not knowing that her step mom was one of the fatalities.

For my area, it’s Selena getting shot by Yolanda Saldivar. I can’t think of anything else that would come close.
Astounding that BR has had so much high profile stuff…Huey Long, Plauche, Kipp, DTL and SVG.

there was a rape/murder of one of my sister's sorority sisters when I was just getting to LSU, never got a lot of press but it has always stuck with me becuase of how sad the whole thing was, among her belongings when her body was discovered was a letter/telegram, can't remember which, informing her that her fiancee had recently been KIA in Vietnam

Benny Joe Stevens
one sorry SOB. basically executed entire family and one friend that was spending night.
Glenda (38), Wesley (38), Dylan (11), his friend Heath (10) and Erica were all at their trailer when Stevens pulled up in his truck. Wesley opened the sliding glass back door and called, "Benny Joe, can I help you?"
Erica then heard a gunshot and heard Wesley scream. Erica tried to rescue her brother Dylan and his friend, but Stevens shot her in the back. She then hid in the bath and watched helplessly as her mother was shot by Stevens. She then heard him say, "Bitch, I told you that I'd kill you one of these days." Erica climbed through a window and heard more gunshots while she was running away from the trailer. Erica went to a neighbor's house for help and collapsed at the door. Erica told the neighbors that her father had shot her mother, stepfather, brother and friend. Stevens returned to his home where his wife inquired, "What did you do?" to which Stevens replied, "I just killed a family."

We haven't had many huge ones in Lafayette but when I lived in DC, my apartment was in the middle of the 'wahabbi corridor' where a lot of the 9/11 hijackers lived, and the Beltway Snipers killed a woman about 4 blocks from where I lived.

Amy Hebert in Raceland is the first one that comes to mind for me. So heartbreaking.
quote:
Amy Hebert fatally stabbed her children and the family dog; Camille was aged 9 and Braxton was aged 7. Hebert told a psychiatrist that Camille had begged for her life.[1] The children had defensive wounds to their hands and arms;[11] Camille had about 30–35 stab wounds to the front of her torso while Braxton had about 50-55 stab wounds to his torso, with about 30 to the front and 20–25 to the back.[1] All of Camille's vital organs had been hit, and both victims had been stabbed in the heart.[11] Camille was also stabbed on her scalp about 30 times;[1] the blade did not penetrate her skull.[11] Amy Hebert also stabbed herself about 30 times, giving herself wounds in the abdomen, chest, neck, and wrists

That's an insane story.
In my lifetime I'd say either the Louisiana Pizza Kitchen murders or the Kim Ahn restaurant killings.
New Orelans is a hard one for this.
Mark Essex killed 9 and wounded 12 more.
The New Year's Eve killings?
Both of those were much bigger national stories.

I can't believe that the West Memphis Three or the Morgan Nick disappearance wasn't the first one mentioned for Arkansas.
Ronald Gene Simmons killing spree (1985)
Don Henry and Kevin Ives (The Boys on the Tracks 1987)
Nona Dirksmeyer murder (2005).
