I wish it was around 35 years ago when I was stationed in England and phoning home every week. Standing in a phone box in the freezing cold in the middle of the night. Feeding that damn phone One Pound Sterling coins every couple of minutes. Must've spent over a few thousand bucks in four years.

It keeps track of your name/info loaded into the app and purchase history made through the app.
That's not spyware if they tell you it is happening.

Can one of you social media folk give me a quick explanation what this is and why I need it.
free voice and video calling to anyone anywhere in the world. You can also text. That way, if you or someone else goes to another country, the traveler doesn't need to pay the international roaming charges. All they need is WiFi data, free or from a cheap e-sim, and they have unlimited free international calling.

It’s a texting app owned by Facebook.
Basically the entire world uses it except us, especially in Latin America.
If you’re talking with Costa Ricans, everyone will have it and request yours instead of just texting you on messenger.

We have an office in Shanghai. I am in China 2-3 times a year. Very easy to get past the great firewall. WeChat, WhatsApp, AliPay and DiDi and Baidu are what you need.

It is a great app for interacting abroad or with people abroad. It is encrypted and works over wifi. When I go abroad and communicate with businesses or my wife, it is on Whatsapp. For people abroad it is often cheaper then text bc of phone packages.

Tell me you don’t travel internationally without telling me
Posted on 1/8/26 at 9:32 pm to madamsquirrel
Yes. I really only use it when travel internationally. Boutique hotel recently in the Caribbean - they only used WhatsApp for communication. Built in translator works well too.

It is used pretty much everywhere but here. Any international group trip will set up WhatsApp chats to easily communicate with the whole group at once.
