Navarre’s Pastries in Springfield. LA
Can't believe it took this long for someone to say this.
Cream cheese only...the best.
I've had many family members and coworkers, after trying it for the first time, say it was the best ever. Many have told me how they started buying Navarre's and then they had the same reactions from other people eating it for the first time.

If you live in Houston, there’s a place in Katy called The Best Stop Cajun Market that sells Randazzo king cakes.

Meche’s in Lafayette. Not dry like all those stale cinnamon roll cakes. But the purest will say it’s a donut. Who gives a shite? It ain’t dry! I hate king cakes from anywhere else and it ain’t even close.

Oak Point in Watson. They just took over Calandro's on Perkins this month, so we won't have to drive to Watson to get our king cakes!

Have you tried Keller's in Lafayette/Youngsville? Personally I find it's a good middle ground from the brioche style, donut style, and gallette style.

Bakin' Ya Crazy out of Ascension Parish. Best, freshest king cake I've ever had. Check them out on Facebook.

I’ll give Keller’s a try then. Everybody in our area are making boudin king cakes and they’re like brioche with boudin and cream cheese. They’re ok. Just not great. I’ll be glad when that fad is over.
Thanks for the recommendation on Kellers.

It's all personal preference. I had just about all the well known ones as we have king cake parties. I still go back to rouse. Bavarian. Especially when you factor in how much a pain in the arse it is to get some of those others.

this thread and discussion is well timed.
Help me out, the last week of January my team is having a dinner at our CIO’s house in The Woodlands. Besides bringing a nice bottle of wine, what Louisiana King Cake shop should I have ship in a king cake or 2?

Keller's is excellent, their turtle king cake might be my favorite of all time.
Also in Lafayette Poupart's (The original Mr Poupart moved to Lafayette from France where he was a pastry chef) Bakery offers Mardi Gras style king cakes using brioche dough filled with your choice of cream cheese, fruits, nuts or a combination of those fillings then baked and covered with icing and colored sugar in purple, green and gold.. They also have a traditional French King Cake that is a round puff pastry with almond filling. Both are really good. Overall I think I like theirs better than kellers outside of the turtle king cake.
Does anyone other than Meche's do that? I wouldn't say that is the "Acadiana Donut Cake". It was a cake developed with the aid of a consultant by Rickey Meche because he didn't have a traditional oven to cook a king cake in. I do like Meche's king cake even though ti is not the traditional king cake in any way, it is the one I typically get, partially because it is very convenient being the closest to my house by a good bit.

quote:Gautreaux's, Cajun Market, Mikey's, Crystal's, Village Deaux...Those are just the one's to be voted in the top 3 'Best King Cakes" by the Advocate, KLFY, ect every year. I think this style is very much the "Acadiana Style". You can find similar cakes in other parts of the state, but not at that level, nor with as large a following (pun intended).

It's not the only variety available in the area, obviously the Brioche style can be found as well as the traditional gallette, and Twins and Keller's and some others have unique styles themselves. I would definitely say the Acadiana King Cake is the fried donut style. Doesn't mean it is the only option, but it is definitely the area of the state where you will find not only the most variety of that style, but also see those options ranked higher than the 'traditional cakes' on average.
