Holsum Bread

We were a Sunbeam family. I don’t eat much light bread anymore, but I usually keep a loaf of Clover Valley or Great Value in the pantry for the occasions that I do.

When we moved into my childhood home I befriended an old man next door that financed the house for my parents. He would plant a garden by us and we all worked it. We hung out quite a bit until he died helping someone clean up after hurricane alaina. I now own one of the houses he built just down the hill from where I grew up. Papas old chicken pin was still partially standing. I made a coffee table out of some wood I salvaged. I look back on my childhood as stressful because my parents always fought. I always knew my dad was a jackass, but it was tough to accept that my mom has her own issues. I didn’t do any better as a parent, although we live a much more financially comfortable life. But for the few years I hung out with papa on his tractors, those were good memories.

Riding home from Aunt Uncle's Christmas eve party, I'm in the back of the hatch back.. Looking up at the stars ( appx 4 and in the age when kids sat in back window/ or floor for long trips.). I see a red light in the sky.... In "I see Santa...I see Santa ". And my parents telling me " you better get to sleep " and me trying so hard to go to sleep.. That I couldn't. But I wasnt opening my eyes

Memories of my dad tearing my arse up with a belt. Ah, the good ole days. I wish he was alive to thank him.

I replied to the last post in the thread

And apparently you didn't look at the content because how does that reflect upon you in any way?

Are you the clueless girl in the video clip ?

I don’t get sentimental about my own childhood. But I do get very sentimental thinking about my kids when they were smaller.

I remember my Dad taking us for Ice Cream on summer Sundays. Or even sometimes making homemade ice cream at the house. Pretty sure one could still do those things today. With every bit the same wholesomeness of back then in the 70's.

I will say that our monthly trip to Schwegmann’s was something I looked forward to so much. Afterwards we would stop by Audubon Park and picnic and run crazy and climb the old oaks! A ‘55 Chevy Bel Air was our ride at the time and it was 4 x 60 air conditioning; 4 windows down and 60 mph to cool off.

Cooking an armadillo over an open fire during a rainstorm, under a rigged-up tin shelter, with one of my Dad's buddies

The other night I stopped to let an armadillo waddle across the road.

Two days later, I passed a busted up carcass as I was leaving the neighborhood. Guess I set a bad precedent.

We had 7-8 boys in our neighborhood within 3-4 years in age, we were always outside doing something.

At the end of the street was about 100 acres of woods with two ponds.

We built forts, dirt bike/BMX tracks, fires, had campouts, played kick-the-can on and on.

Fished - I caught a 6.8 lb bass at 12 years old, still have the mount.

Life was so carefree, it was fantastic.

When the Marlboro catalog comes in and your dad hands you a shoe box with all the points he has collected.

There was a hamburger stand not far from our house that one of our neighbors owned. It was called the Burger Bar. We called the owners Aunt and Uncle so and so like they were our real cousins but weren't. Every child in our family had a burger named for them because everybody wanted theirs different and it was easier for them to remember the name and match it to the burger they wanted. Good times for sure. Sadly, they tore it down a few years ago.

Riding bikes with neighborhood friends, flashlight tag on summer nights, kickball, wiffleball, football out in the street or in yards. Grew up in the 90s. Wouldn’t change it for anything

Too many to list. Unfortunately, those days aren’t ever coming back.

I don’t know man. Just got back from north Georgia mountains. On Thursday night we went to drive in. For 2-3 hours before the movie there were 100ish kids from all over America that didn’t know each other playing kickball, tossing the baseball, playing all kinds of other games with each other on the field in front of the screen. When it started to get dark they all ran around the edge of the woods catching fireflies. These kids ranged in age from kindergarten to probably 13-14.

There’s a lot of good shite that happens daily in this country that the internet tends to cover up.

Honestly, days without an iPhone and social media.

People don’t talk and interact with each other anymore.
