I worked with a Chinese girl for a few years. She was the sweetest person I’ve ever worked with. But when she spoke to her family on the phone in Chinese, she was yelling her arse off. It was kind of funny to hear

The newer immigrants are very stoic. The ones who have been here a while are more friendly.

Many of the Chinese restaurant workers in S.F. and Oakland are immigrants who are working long hours to pay-off debts owed to the smugglers that brought them to America. I remember reading an article in the SF Chronicle about the Chinese male restaurant workers and the level of poverty they incurred for decades. Many are too poor to find a marriage partner.

The only Chinese place in my little town is owned by Chinese immigrants who opened it in another location in town about 20 years ago. I can remember going there, and their four children, ages infant to six were always there, too.
Over the years, I’ve had the privilege of teaching all four of those kids and met the parents many times. They are wonderful people who have truly lived the American dream that most Americans never take advantage of anymore.

I don’t know so much about the angry part, but they’re pushy as hell. At one of the more popular buffets in town, they will literally start wiping the table with you sitting there after you’ve had your second trip to the hog trough. After one employee reached over our table mid-meal to fill the salt and pepper shakers, that done it for me. Their show to run, but I don’t have to partake.
