Well…
Christmas has been ruined. It has turned into a day that is more about gifts (debt), guilt, and resentment.
Picture this, you are a single parent, busting your arse, and Christmas rolls around. You do everything you can to make that day as magical as you can for your kid. You probably overspend and why wouldn’t you?
Johnny down the street scored a dirt bike, an Xbox, and a basketball goal. Does Santa love him more? Is Johnny a much better kid?
So you go into debt. You spend the next several months climbing out of that debt, only to do it all over again.
Christmas has completely lost its meaning. It’s now about a fat dude, who was literally created by Coca Cola to sell more drinks.
And let’s not get into the mutual gift giving of extended family. You give a nice gift to your cousin or aunt and they get you something thoughtless or cheap, and resentment kicks in.
We celebrate the frick out of Thanksgiving. That doesn’t mean I don’t give my daughter gifts for Christmas. She’s always done well, but it’s almost lagniappe. She always has what she needs and most of what she wants the other 364 days. This year, she’s getting amazing concert tickets to see a band with me that we both really love, an experience.
Thanksgiving has turned into what I think Christmas should be, and it gets overlooked. Good food, good drink, family and friends, football, some movies on the couch with loved ones. The only thing missing is church.

Christmas was hard for me for a while. My mom died 2 days before Christmas my freshman year of college. I hated it for a while. But now, I have a family of my own, it’s reignited a love that I used to have of the season seeing their excitement and wonder. It’s gone from a mourning season to one of enjoying the memories

Christmas is about celebrating the birth of Christ

1) It's over-commercialized beyond the point of annoying. If it just ramped up for the month from Thanksgiving to Christmas Day it would be fine.
I'll be responsible for making a thread today a woman hating thread. Is the marketing for men, or for women? They respond to it, so it happens, since they control the bulk of household spending.
If you want to call me wrong, tell me one f@*% straight dude that wants to hear Mariah Carey. Ever.

Our kids are grown with no grandkids yet and we both come from small families, We are both only children so our kids have no cousins. We have very few first cousins ourselves, I only have 5.
That and working retail in high school and college have stomped it for us. Our kids we just give $ and we don't buy each other presents, we buy whatever, whenever.

We do Christmas, just not until after Thanksgiving.

Well, 10 days before Christmas I got a letter from a lawyer representing my WHORE of a wife. Gave the fake tree and ornaments away. Surprised she didn’t take them in the divorce.
But, I really love this time of year. She put a bow around her pussy and rode half of Birmingham until my money ran out.

It's just the wife and I and two cats, no need to do anything extravagant.

There was a family down the street that didn’t celebrate Christmas. No Church, no tree, no toys or fancy dinner. It made you feel bad that on Christmas Day when other kids were outside playing with their toys, they were left just watching other kids having fun.
Kids are only young once and they remember.

When all the older family members died, we started celebrating Hanukkah because Jesus did. The Gospel of John says that He was in Jerusalem for the feast of Dedication.

Isn't really a happy time with my family. That and it gets expensive

that big, jolly man in the red suit with a white beard — didn’t always look that way. In fact, many people are surprised to learn that prior to 1931, Santa was depicted as everything from a tall gaunt man to a spooky-looking elf. He has donned a bishop's robe and a Norse huntsman's animal skin.
quote:
In 1930, artist Fred Mizen painted a department-store Santa in a crowd drinking a bottle of Coke. The ad featured the world's largest soda fountain, which was located in the department store Famous Barr Co. in St. Louis, Mo. Mizen's painting was used in print ads that Christmas season, appearing in The Saturday Evening Post in December 1930.
quote:
In 1931 the company began placing Coca-Cola ads in popular magazines. Archie Lee, the D'Arcy Advertising Agency executive working with The Coca-Cola Company, wanted the campaign to show a wholesome Santa who was both realistic and symbolic. So Coca-Cola commissioned Michigan-born illustrator Haddon Sundblom to develop advertising images using Santa Claus — showing Santa himself, not a man dressed as Santa.
quote:
People loved the Coca-Cola Santa images and paid such close attention to them that when anything changed, they sent letters to The Coca-Cola Company. One year, Santa's large belt was backwards (perhaps because Sundblom was painting via a mirror). Another year, Santa Claus appeared without a wedding ring, causing fans to write asking what happened to Mrs. Claus.
Edit: hallmark basically created Valentine’s Day.
We’ve been had.

If we are honest, for Americans it is about celebrating consumer culture. American’s real god is money and material possessions.

I don’t lack for self confidence. I’m just lonely and don’t really like spending time with my family very much. I don’t have a wife or kids either.
When I try to embrace the family aspects of Christmas, I quickly get reminded that I really don’t enjoy spending time with my parents and siblings very much nor am I still close with my cousins. Everyone is either retired or married with small kids, so I feel like I am in a completely different phase of life than everyone else when I already had little to nothing in common with them anyways.
When I try to do the homey stuff, I feel like I am throwing a house party that no one showed up to after getting frustrated with lights that won’t work or cooking a bunch of food I can’t afford. It just seems like a waste of effort and energy.
When I try to lean on the religious aspects, I sit in a church pew alone feeling isolated and disconnected, like a spectator more than a member of the congregation. No one talks to me, and when I sign up to lists to volunteer, no one ever invites me.
It’s usually best to just skip it so as not to be reminded of everything I lost and what I seem incapable of making for myself.
Honestly, to me this sounds like you are normal! I feel for ya.
Christ was never in Christmas to start. Don't let your church life get confused because of this holiday. People are simply conformists going through the motions. They are afraid to capture and digest the truth of falsehood regarding Christmas.
Christ is my Savior and I can't tell you enough for what he's done for me. This holiday has zero to do with Him and people climb on board as if they're doing some righteous thing.
This holiday should be about Santa and kids...only.
