Every. Single. Piece of legislation in the history of legislative bodies is someone's morality.

Not as long as it requires the legislature to either pass a law directly, or for them to put it on the ballot.
Yeah, a while back a legislator did try to get it on the ballot but couldn’t. Our leaders decided we could not be trusted with such a vote.

The weed prohibition arguments have evolved, too. I recall a sheriff not long ago finally admit in an interview that his office budget needs illegal weed. Might’ve been on NOLA.com.
A few years ago when the issue arose, the sheriffs/DAs decided citizens shouldn’t be allowed to vote on the matter, lest they legalize and then put themselves in harms way of the feds.
an especially retarded argument considering multiple states had already legalized at this point. “We’re afraid of the Feds arresting you for weed! So we will keep it illegal and arrest you for weed!”

Weed / pre-trial diversion is a huge cash cow for the LDAA
It's very short sided by legislation to use this as an excuse, although they will never admit it.
The revenue generated from taxes, the reduction in crime, less crowed jails, etc will save MILLIONS and free up police, judges, etc to do real work, fill all the open police shortages, give teachers raises, grow the economy, etc.

I think you are assuming real work is what they want. The system sets up just nicely for them as it is. Path of least resistance.

Reading that other states legalized marijuana. Why was this not a topic on the ballot in New Orleans?
Cmon man. How long have you lived here? We are trendsetters, we buy high and sell low..

2. There hasn't been enough time for the political cronies/insiders to have made their money from the complicated medical MJ system yet.

Just throwing in another reason why withholding rec MJ is a colossal mistake:
We're missing out on a multi billion dollar industry that's in it's infancy
.
Colorado, Oregon, California and other states are getting a head start on the whole industry. Not just growing, but manufacture of products and items related to the industry.
Not only are we missing out on sales taxes from the sales of an individual joint, we're missing out on the jobs for people that grow the weed, or make the gummies, or vape pens, or whatever. We're missing out on making and manufacturing these products to be sold to the rest of the country and the world. We're not just missing out on LA citizens tax dollars, but money from everywhere.
Our legislators are so incredibly myopic it hurts. At least they'll have their moral high ground to stand on when the dollars from this industry could have stopped coastal erosion, fix drainage, repair roads, etc.

blaming this on "north LA" is absurdly dumb

Blaming it on religious regressives (in both parts of the state), and law enforcement not wanting to let go of their cash cow is perfectly fair though.

Exactly.
When you have dumb shits running the government, this is what you get.
Why do we have dumb shits running the government? Because that's what gets people elected here.
