The biggest issue with the “it’s fake” take is that, if this was all down for publicity, they wouldn’t have had them cursing afterwards making the entire exchange unavailable to most markets.
Will Smith dropping F bombs after the slap is really what takes away any realistic possibility this was staged.

Even Jada seemed to be smiling at first. Then she realized what Rock said. Will probably didn't react to the joke as much as Jada's facial expression. I think that's why there was a delay,

It’s not like he punched him, it was a half cocked open handed slap.

Not to mention Chris Rock is just stunned and even says it’s just a joke to Will. I feel like if it were staged CR would’ve had a punchline ready for that (pun intended).
