I tried calling the school once to get some information. The collective IQ of the people who answered the phones was equivalent to severe cognitive deficiency. And that was probably 15-20 years ago. I can't imagine how bad it must be now.

UNO is in the situation they are in due to over 10 years of horrific leadership, as well as the rise of online learning. Non-traditional students - always a big part of UNO - can do an online degree anywhere now instead of having to take night classes at UNO
Additionally a lot of their students have been blocked from registration because they owe money from prior semesters and the school is actually trying to collect.
Yes the city has issues but the city has had issues for many years.
The entire upper leadership at UNO needs to be fired.

Nola population in 1960 was around 630,000. Today it is around 370,000 in city limits.
What I want to know is how is the housing market so expensive if it has lost 35-40% of its population the last 60 years.
Supply of houses is maybe the same, demand has gone way down, economics means that price goes down in this case. Who the hell would downvote this? Lol loser.

Hey, as long as there is Bourbon Street and gumbo nobody else will care. NO is not a city to be taken seriously or a big league city.

New Orleans was so awesome when I was a kid. And the shitbags that have run the city since the eighties will let it burn before they vote in anyone competent to run things.

Online learning is a part of it. There are too many 4 yr schools in Louisiana and the entire country SELA has UNO LSU southern Xavier Dillard Holy cross SUNO SLU Nicholls no need for that many 4 yr schools. Delgado is a huge asset trains many nurses and multiple Allied health fields UNO may be the odd man out in this game

And Tulane and Loyola which are mostly out of state kids but still 2 more 4 yr options in Southeast La

No one wants to live in the East and most of Algiers. There's plenty of supply there.
Then a lot of homes were bought up for short term rental use. So the property is technically being used, but the population dropped as a result of the homeowner leaving.
New Orleans being landlocked led to a huge problem. Many cities solve their own problems by developing new neighborhoods so the wealthy move out of their outdated suburb and into the fancy new ones. That allows the lower-middle class to get decent, but older properties.

Yeah I don’t know what to think. This news on the heels of MSY planning for 60 gates.

I remember when UNO was a good university, We do have a lot of universities and colleges in Louisiana for sure. It’s interesting most have stayed viable. My comment meant to me we are a tourist town and I don’t see them fighting for UNO. As long as we have the fun stuff, that’s what matters to officials. It brings in the money.

over 40 years old or so, quite a few took a class at UNO at some point.
I took a class each summer for 2 summers when home from my SEC college, circa 1999-2000. The place was bustling, and I enjoyed going over for an hour or two then coming back. Sad to hear it’s on the brink of shutting down.

Delagdo has 19000 students. Xavier and Tulane are thriving Loyola is very stable Holy cross on WB is doing well Once TOPS was established a lot more NOLA kids went to LSU becauae afford to. Admission standards and Katrina helped to crush UNO. And also the appeal of college nationally is just not what it used to be for many reasons just go got a 2 yr school like Delgado and get a good job NOLA has 2 about to be 3 med schools multiple nursing schools Ochsner and Chikdrena are expanding Tulane investing downtown a new port on the way airport expanding etc . Saints and Pelicans aren’t going anywhere SLU has sucksd a lot of kids away from UNO as Northshore has expanded UNO will do better under LSU system will become a satellite school

Lots of property off the market since Katrina
Lots of expensive rebuilds
Lots of short term rentals
Not a lot of supply in good neighborhoods
Plenty of cheap homes in bad areas

I know NOLA residents don't want to hear this but if you are wise you'll prepare for an exit plan like now. The writing is on the wall that NOLA is about to experience unprecedent dark times ... worse than Katrina.
I’ve lived here nearly my entire life and yeah, this is the straw that breaks the camel’s back…UNO enrollment decline

Education at every level is bloated and broken. At what point do we let the grown-ups take over?
How about we bring in some competent white-collar professionals with common sense and a spine? Start with mandatory audits—top to bottom at every level. No one is safe. Everything is transparent.
ISD Superintendent pulling in $750K for a three-day workweek? Fired. We can find a dozen former executives who’d do it better for half the pay and wouldn’t need summer vacation.
Two full-time assistants for the drama department? What is this—Broadway? Fired.
“Behavioral Assistant Vice Principal”? Sounds like a made-up role based on feeeewings. Fired.
Director of Equity and Inclusion with a $200K salary and no students in their office all year? Fired.
“Community Enrichment Strategist” on payroll? Fired.
Oh, and the $80,000 budget for “student wellness murals” and “therapeutic gardening”? Cute. Delete it from the books and fire who ever initiated the grants.
We don’t need more consultants, safe-space coordinators, or vibe curators in education. We need teachers who teach, students who learn, and leadership that’s accountable.
It’s that fricking simple. But noooo….we need to subsidize grown adults with meaningless degrees and put them in charge of our children’s education.
FWIW - this isn’t a shot at real hard working teachers here. I know there are a few. My wife is a teacher. But it’s time for change and you know better than anyone it’s gotten out of control.

Crazy low enrollment.
Was around 17k when I attended back in 2003.
