Wife's extended family was doing the lotto ticket thing for little gifts on Christmas Eve. Lots of talk of how people would buy everyone stuff. I told them if I won, you'd see me quietly exiting the door with my immediate family without speaking to anyone there ever again. I said it in a joking manner and they all laughed. Little did they know I was completely serious.

Depending on the size of the win, completely agree with you.

Id tell my father, mother, and wife. Whoever is getting money will have it magically one day. Ill make sure it gets where it needs to go.

Would it be possible to keep the winnings a secret?

$500k would be amazing but possible to hide imo.

If it were possible to hide it I'd probably have done that to be honest

500K is nothing to hide what are you talking about?

You open an account then ACH two separate deposits to two separate banks unless you plan on investing, then go to a reputable brokerage.

No one should ever know any of these details besides you are the bank.

If you mean spending it, thats on you.

First rule when you get rich, dont buy anything. Take a break, relax, get use to the money first and learn to handle it before you start unloading.

I don't hate my family, so I'd probably share with everyone that participated in the white elephant in some manner, depending upon the number of participants.

It would also depend on the nature of the game. If scratchers fall in line with all of the other gifts, would have no issue sharing. If it's obvious the cousin was lazy and just got some scratchers last minute, I'd probably have some hesitation with sharing.

$500k after taxes - let's call it $330k

I’d do it by claiming the ticket was co-owned in whatever proportions I chose. Then each person would be responsible for his own taxes.

I'm sure I would share in OP scenario. I made a sizeable chunk on a business deal last year and quietly went to family members' banks and paid off their credit card balances. My own mother does not know about it, and I only gave my daughter the business card of my broker with instructions to contact him in the event something were to happen to me.
