Choose to represent another nation on a national stage for monetary reasons? Especially when you were born and raised in the US? Go live in Sweden and China. Don't come back.
Why do you hate capitalism?

Yeah... that's just an absolutely retarded take on this.
For Mondo, Sweden allows dual citizenship. For Gu, China does not allow dual citizenship. Gu never gives a straight answer about how she got her Chinese citizenship as you need it to compete for that country. China should have made her renounce her US citizenship. She will never answer questions about it, she just says she is Chinese when she is in China and US when she is in the US.
Did she get a special secret exemption by the Chinese government that she doesn't want the Chinese public to know about or did she renounce and just not say anything to the US? It's weird.

That was my take on it all, China doesn't allow dual citizenship, so there is something going on there. She is having her cake and eating it too. Not against her getting money, but I honestly would like to know the answer.

The petty part of me wants to see Rubio make a statement about looking for a legal avenue to revoke her American citizenship out of respect for China's dual citizenship as she's made her public choice of nationality.
I know it can't be revoked, but frick her.

No, but they should be banned from training in the US.
So much butthurt over these athletes, whose choices and careers could not have less impact on the lives of everyday people with a modicum of emotional maturity.

Sorry, some of us are proud of what this country has given us. No amount of money would let me represent another nation.

If you fight or compete under a foreign flag, you're not a "real" American. If you receive your medal on the podium while a different country's national anthem plays, then you're not an American.

Let me know when you turn down the opportunity to be the best in the world at your job and make tons of money wearing the flag of your parent’s home country because you have dual citizenship and America doesn’t give a shite about your talent except for one week every four years.

Mondo doesn't do it for the check. He just is scared to compete for his spot every four years in a trial. #coward

At the very least, it would be nice if some of these reporters who are breathlessly clamoring to get anti-Trump statements from American athletes would shove a microphone in her face and say something like:

with all that's going on in China - e.g. the internment of over a million of its own citizens - how does it feel to have to represent a country committing these atrocities?

Everyone bitches about the athletes, but what about the American coaches who coach for China and other countries?
It’s far more common.

quote:Just like in American pro sports, vitriol always seems reserved for players and not coaches. I agree that it's weird. You'll seen grown men absolutely bitterly lambasting a 19 year old kid for making a financial decision and they will have ZERO harsh words for elderly adult coaches doing the exact same thing.

Even in the NFL - you'd think the billionaire owners were a pitiful down on their luck bunch given how much the "fans" will knight for them over the players. I can remember in the 80s when players really started pushing to make actual money. The vitriol was insane.

Last year, his best result topped the best American result by more than half a meter.

Sure, I can predict that given an equal opportunity to represent both counties on a world stage, I would choose the country where I was raised and grew up. And the country that allowed me to develop my talents.
Now if Mondo wasn't able to make the US team, then I would be more empathetic to him representing another nation.
You're a fool if you think Mondo would not be wealthy if he represented the United States.

Bad meets happen, which is why he chose the easy way out
Mondo is the top athlete in the world at his event. He would make 7 figures a year even if he competed for the USA. He chose not to. You can defend him if you want because he was born in Louisiana, which I have no idea why you do because he denounced Louisiana and America the first chance he could
If everyone thought like mondo the Olympics would be pointless. Just have another individual event that nobody cares to watch like the rest of the time

America should have thought about that before they didn't prioritize pole vaulting and Mondo. No one's fault but our own.
