The only choking I've heard people talk about is Amber Glenn and Malinin..

Amber Glenn, who has never won a single individual medal at a major event, held a very weird place in the mind of certain Twitter accounts, though she ultimately finished in 5th place.
Outside of this board, I saw nothing about it being a disappointing performance.
This was one of the strongest US Winter Olympic teams heading into the games and outside of Malinin (who did choke), overall the team met or exceeded expectations.
There were some other disappointments like with short track speed skating for the women, but also surprises like women’s moguls, Ben Ogden in cross country skiing, and team aerials

It was the best medal haul per event for the US outside of 1980, 2002, and 2010, all of which were in North America. There will be a caveat because of Russia’s absence, though a lot of Russias are now competing for Georgia, Kazakhstan, etc.
Unless we want to go 1952 with 22 events and minimal Asian presence

Yeah, that's why she was crying her arse off when she got her score. She wasn't at all disappointed...
...as well as article after article noting the sad mishaps... failures. It happens. It's gonna get blown up a bit due to the controversy.
We have done great in these Olympics. It has been fun as hell to watch. People are just going after Amber Glenn for her bullshite as well as the freestyle skier guy and his bullshite. They're free game.
I don't believe Malinin has said anything wrong. But he was maybe thought of our best athlete going in and highest chance of gold medals. He choked and I it sucks. But he choked bad, and I hated it for him. He is a weird and cocky dude.

That was round 1, where she did poorly.
But she got 5th overall, in line or better than expectations bc she’s never gotten an individual medal.
Agreed on Malinin. Our biggest or second biggest name heading in, with an impeccable resume. Then a terrible performance in round 2 that took him off the podium altogether.
I got a kick out of his dramatic voiceovers during his performance where he says the most trite things as if they are profound

Ended up with gold in the two premier events- Mens hockey, womens figure skating
Gold in the womens downhill, gold in womens hockey, won a mens cross country skiing medal for the first time in 50 years.
Pretty damn successful

wanna know what Norwegians do year round for work….Are all of them training for this shite?
Mary Carillo
We don’t push the kids into a specific sport and pigeon-hole them for life, as they are all on skis or skates. Everything is free!!! The kids can come out to the same facilities that the Olympians train at…one day a week on a Tuesday to ski jump as young as 6. All while NBC presents this Idyllic episode of Carillo and the kids sitting around eating American style hot dogs and hot chocolate over a bonfire.
In the last minute of the fluff, oh and by the way, at the age of 13 the best are identified by the government and the Nordic foundations to begin their training regimes for potential Olympians.

It was a great Olympics for Team USA. Only complete self-destruction was Malinin (and even he still won a gold in team) and pretty much everybody else either performed as expected or overachieved.

Also the short track chick who was favored to win a bunch of events but couldn't stay upright.

Winter Olympics have never been our strong suit. They did great in my opinion.

You can fund a lot of universal youth sports when you have a $2T sovereign wealth fund and less than 6M people

I would say this even happens in the summer games too. People just assume the US will win because US. I swear every summer Olympics at least one or two people will start a thread about why the US isnt winning the Olympics a week in - well before track, swimming, and gymnastics medals start coming in.
The 2028 calendar is really going to get these types going, as swimming is being moved to the second week so that they can get SoFi outfitted with the pool after the opening ceremony.
