Im not far from hwy 421. We've been seeing a few moving just not getting great opportunities. More seen in the woods by acorn trees and thick stuff.

Pretty sure all the acorns are sour by now, also pretty sure the number of acorns on the ground don't change when a doe goes into heat.

Work kept me out of the woods during the traditional best times this year, so I can't say first hand what our rut was like, but there was a fair amount of daytime buck movement on camera, most were younger bucks that I would let walk. Saw very few mature deer on camera the entire season though.

I wish hunting season wasn't over here.

A couple of nights ago I glanced out the kitchen window and there in my driveway was the biggest doe I'd ever seen chewing on one of my wife's cedar shrubs.

She saw it, opened the side door and yelled at it and it just looked at her. After a few moments it turned and sauntered off around the side of the garage.

Later it was coming back for another bite but at that moment my plow guy was pulling his truck into the driveway to clear the snow and it ran off.

I put a camera on a group of three oaks and deer are still coming eat on the acorns. No corn put here. I passed on a couple smaller bucks and a spike that in hindsight I should have shot. I think rut might be starting with what I saw on camera recently.

Lack of rain is slowing the rotting process down. Deer are 100% still eating acorns tonight in my area.

Acorns aren’t sour because there’s been very little rain. Agree with others that acorns are still dropping. Good year for the deer. Not so good for the hunter.

Didn't survey the whole woods, but managed to find a few amongst the hundreds of empty caps, picked up a handful of white oak acorns yesterday and they were all split open and mush.

I have cameras on white oaks, plenty of does, and young bucks, nothing mature

Regardless, it doesn't change when does go into heat.

And you think the rut has passed already?

The rut isn't an On/Off switch

There is pre-rut, peak rut, and post-rut, followed by a dead period every month for 2-3 months, bucks will be chasing does well into February or beyond.

Right and I do not believe we have hit peak rut yet.

Pre rut is the chase, or pursuit.
Peak rut is no bucks seen because they are hunkered down with a doe, like hooker in a hotel room. ETA: Peak rut is the worst time to hunt, and where everyone says "we missed it" or "the ruts over"
Post rut is the refuel stage, where bucks are dumb feeding in day time in the wide open.

We usually see 2 cycles from the week before Christmas, until Jan 4-7th. Then it dies off and picks back up end of January, but not nearly as active.

We are in the dead period, getting ready to get back into prerut. By we, I mean where I hunt, you may be different.

ETA2: In places that have actual seasons, like spring summer fall and winter, not bow or rifle, such as Illinois or Missouri, the rut is very different than along SELA/SWMS

Yeah, I’m jealous too.

ETA: I get to hunt fairly close to him as a guest on a very good friend’s lease, coming back to hunt in MS after 5 days hunting South Texas isn’t much fun.

It’s challenging for sure. Great season to bring guests that have been asking to come for years. They don’t see anything and never ask to come back

Recovered from the mystery illness that sidelined me for nearly a month. Making up for lost time. You need to come make a snapper trip this summer!

For those that have wondered, I was late getting to my blind clearing trees off the road, so I parked my SxS a few hundred feet behind the blind. Had a unicorn spike walk almost under my stand and then within feet of the SxS with zero cares. Had a different (traditional) spike chasing three does a bit later. Since I’m here by myself and felt a cocktail was better than cleaning a deer, he got lucky. Next weekend, not so much. Heard a couple of neighbors popping caps, seems like they are moving again after the shite weather.

Glad you’re doing better. The ladies better watch out now that you’re back!

I would like to make that work! I’ll see how things go and touch base with you.
