Anybody ever hear of old bucks using younger bucks as cannon fodder

I have personally seen turkeys do this shite particularly with decoys but I always thought bucks were solo breeders etc. However, in the haunted swamp I hunt I am thinking this old buck is ridiculous smart.
The Story.
This year one of the hunters today sees the big swamp buck coming to his left with another buck, (a 2.5 year old long spike cull buck) he tracks the big boy behind some bushes right at dust and he sticks his head out and he kills him. Only it’s the wrong buck, the spike is still 170 pounds and with his big spike head against the trees etc he thought he had the big boy. Ok shite happens.
However, two years ago on the same stand the exact same thing happened to me at almost the same spot except it was a 7 point buck. And I am pretty sure it was same big swamp buck who was a 3 year old then.
I was definitely tracking the big buck when he went behind some brush and did this exact shite. He just stuck his head out and stopped.
It’s almost like he sends the little buddy out first. I have seen this type behavior on food plots. I have even been told let all the little bucks come on first the big ones will come last but never anything like this.
Could he really be that damn smart? Well, he is a 200 lb 5 year old buck in Washington County, Alabama so I am beginning to think so. (The old toms are definitely this smart) Crazy the exact same thing happens same spot almost exactly two years apart. I am old with bad eyes etc, but this time was a 20 something year old local boy who lives in the woods.

Wouldn’t call it smarts or logical thinking but yes bucks do this all the time, heck, does let their fawns come out 1st to feed in plots or feeders.
They don’t get old by coming out 1st.

Nilgai do it also. The biggest one in the group males and females usually come out last.
The problem is shooting the wrong buck
I’ve killed a lot of good deer over the years but never killed the wrong buck. It’s one thing to kill a 10 pointer or 8 pointer you thought was a certain deer but to kill a spike vs a big buck is next level stupid.

I didn’t give him shite, he was sick over it. It’s a cull deer anyway. Older farts like me don’t have the eyes or ears anymore but generally have the patience, younger hunters have the skills and ability but not the patience. (On my frick up I was in open two man stand with about 2 dozen does and yearlings within 60-80 feet of me and two yearlings under my stand. I couldn’t believe they didn’t see me or smell me, when he put that head up and nose up sniffing I took the shot, should have waited but I was on borrowed time as I had been there 30 minutes and the deer where on me within 10 minutes

Mature deer cautiously approaching a green field isn’t big news. Neither is a hunter getting buck fever.

There are two bulls standing on a hill overlooking a pasture full of cows. The younger bull, eager, but lacking experience, says to the old bull “Hey, let’s run down there and f@#k ourselves a cow.” The old bull, who has spent season after season in this pasture, turns to the younger bull, chuckles, and replies “Nah, how about we walk down there, and f@#k them all.”
It's just natural, the young bucks want to run out front and the older wiser ones come way in the back

Dr. James Kroll discusses this in his book. He refers to the first buck as the toad.

Are you seeing a therapist?

So y’all are shooting at deer at dusk without verifying it’s the deer you actually want to be shooting at? Yikes.

If this is how you hunt, get used to fricking up

It is natural curiosity, ever walk through the woods with a couple young boys? They will be a few steps ahead looking past every curve, looking down every lane, they are excited and want to be the first ones to see something. Older guys just kind of hang back , take thier time and wait for something to happen

Your camp either has the smartest deer and turkeys in the world or the dumbest people in the world hunting them
I know my thoughts on it

Spikes act stupidly. The big boys just probably let them do their thing.

I don’t think old bucks suddenly become sentinel beings but I have seen on multiple occasions a shooter buck skirt the woods around a field or hang out in the brush until after shooting light.
On my old lease Two consecutive years I killed a shooter buck hunting a thicket behind a big green field. Is tough hunting because we all want to see 500 yards around us and pew pew with our nice scopes but hunting woods around fields in a lot of places is more productive.

If a buck sticks its head out, shouldn’t you be able to see its antlers?

How’s he supposed to positively distinguish between a rack buck and a spike while hammered drunk with bad eyesight and using the scope as binos? It’s like some of yall don’t even think before you post.

It doesn't surprise me in the least that you hunt with other dumbasses who don't know what they are shooting at.
