So is my only option paying for the geaux card or the standard mapping LA-1 e-card? Or is it possible to get homemade maps for the New Orleans/St. Bernard areas?

There are options. Whodat can hook you up.

I made a chip that covers from BSM (Hopedale) to south of Pointe a La Hache and all points in between, but it takes trial and error and two pieces of software. Typically the files are too big to email, so you have to snail mail, overnight, or 2 day ship it.

You can make your lowrance maps for anywhere in the world. You can have multiple areas/states on one card. You can add and change what's on the card. Screw paying $200 for the lowrance map cards.

Thanks for the input, sounds like Lowrance with the option of making your own maps would be a great option.

Anyone know of a way to make maps with a Mac? I've tried making some using insight Genesis and sas planet but couldn't get it figured out. Had a problem with opening the programs and also with the file conversions.

Before I pull the trigger, I want to confirm. The custom maps are compatible with Lowrance Elite 7 HDI?

Making a map of Cocodrie, PAC, Chauvin area now.

Yes that is the exact unit i have. The maps will not work with an DSI unit.

Awesome. Currently have the Elite 5 and the maps are worthless.

Thanks.

Do you think the HDS unit is worth the extra $? Trying to decide between the Elite and the HDS.

im not an expert but i guess it depends on where you are fishing. I dont use the fish finder portion of my unit and i dont have a bow unit to look at while trolling banks. In the shallow dirty south la waters, personally, i think its more of a hassle getting clear images. I dont know how much you would be able to see scanning banks of a canal that is 2-4' deep with cloudy water with sidescan. There are times in deep canals ill look at mine but ive never caught fish because of it. FTR,Ive never messed with a unit that has sidescan but i have read up on them and seen images of their scans.
If you were in toledo and could scan for bass 20' down or off to the sides of some deep drop offs, then yes, it would be bad arse.

Fish mainly coastal areas south of Houma. Do not use the sonar that much except to see the depth of spots, so having structure scan is not a big deal to me. So this unit would be primarily used for the map feature so this is why I am leaning towards the Elite.

One of the things that is different about the HDS and the Elite is the HDS has a faster processor. When I am running you can barely see at the top of the screen the new sections of map being loaded. My boat tops out at 45 so it isn't that big of a deal, but if you run faster it could be a bigger problem. The other thing is zooming in and out. It will just show a white screen for 10-20 seconds or so while it loads map. On an HDS you can zoom in and out with hardly any lag.

correct, I had the elite on my old boat and now I have the hds 7 touch gen 2 and its night and day difference.

it has more features as well. it has a tide option to show you the tides of current area which is cool. also with the aerial maps it zooms in and out very fast and loads faster than the elite units.

both are good units just depends on your budget. the elite will take map cards and work for navigation purposes.

Whodat, you want to give us a run down on how to make the maps. I emailed you a while back about getting some maps and for the fee you quoted me at I want to try and make my own before I buy some. I'm a tight SOB.

There is A step by step video but I do it a little different. Also I'm much cheaper than 200 to 300$ cards. I will do pretty much any area for anyone. I have a lot made already and don't mind helping fellow ob guys out. Downsouthdave has my map card and loves it.

That being said if you have time and patience make your own. It's very time consuming

Oh no I didn't have a problem with the charge at all. I completely understand, I thought it would be cool to learn. I'll give it a shot and if it looks like shite. I'll buy a copy off of you.
