I bought a rifle from a pawn shop last year. I don't think I got a great deal, but I got what I wanted. A Remington 700 that was built back when they were great quality. $500 for a model 700 270 with a Leupold vxii on it. Although I replaced the rings and put a vxiii on top.

I tend to go more for handguns;
but always do online research like recommended. TheHighRoad, Thefiringline, maybe search on gunboards, (all dot com).
Look around and see if there's a forum dedicated to the brand you're interested in, and also look for forums on that caliber round.
Then, check out gunbroker, gunsamerica, and gunauctions (dot com). See: what prices they are bid at, what price bids are left alone, look and see if there are any online vendors selling it outright instead of auction (Bud's is good for this).
This gives you good info on what to look for re: problems, and what the going market price is.
Shipping tends to be fairly pricey, plus there's a transfer fee. Figure all that into the price, and go see if you can find and beat that locally at a shop:
For example, if a post 61 Winchester 94 is selling online for $350, and you can get a shop to sell you for $375, you come out about equal (figure tax locally, figure s/h + transfer fee for auction or online).
Might be an idea to bring enough cash to grab it, they might knock it down more and forget tax if you have cash in hand.

It's not? Everyone does it at pawn shops here on the NorthShore.

Hit the shitty mom and pop places. The shops that deal in volume will give you some great deals because they would rather have cash then let the thing sit on the shelf another 6 months. The crappier the better.
Those shops that are kinda pawn shop but also have new inventory, you might as well buy new.

You just have to be knowledgeable about guns and their values. I’ve bought some absolute steals in pawn shops.
An original run 25-06 fluted Sendero with vx2 Leupold for $550.
A Mag Stalker Auto 5 Browning for $465 that was like new. I flipped it and sold it for $1200 two weeks later. Already had the one I always hunt with
Glock 19’s with 5 Mags for less than $400 out the door 3 times.
A H&K SBE for $500 that I flipped for $1100 the day I bought it. I already had another
Those are just a few of the deals I’ve found in pawn shops. I love em because they’ll dicker on price if you’ve got cash In hand.

I got a Ruger P95 in like new condition with original mags and box for $300 otd from a local pawn shop last month. I felt we both got an ok deal on it. They made money, I got a fair price. It's how business should work.

I don't doubt that a bit!

Touché lol. You’re probably exactly right

Bump, but our local pawn shop will actually go with you to the local range to test it. You have to pay for it first, and if it does not fire properly or is not what you want, you get a full refund.

I check pawn shops from time to time to see what they might have. I have never once seen a gun in a pawn shop and thought to myself "that's a good price".
I picked up a doublestack Russian Makarov in a pawn shop near Tony's, for under $200. The girl at the desk tried to warn me that "it says it's 9mm, but they don't fit".
The Makarov is chambered in 9x18 (actually 9.3x18), not 9 Parabellum. I know this because I have a few other pistols in that caliber from the Cold War. The magazine alone is worth more than a hundred.
Also found a VERY nice CZ 27, early WW2, with Czech lettering instead of German, nice high polished blue, slanted serrations, and markings for the German Railway, in a more rural pawn. $225. I went there to pick up a transfer on a gunbroker deal, and my son said "hey, come look at this over here". Came home with 2 guns that day, instead of just the transfer.

I've found some very good deals in pawn shops. I stop in a few every few months. Most times prices are too high but every once in a while you stumble across a GREAT deal. Bought TWO different old Browning auto 5 Magnum 20's at different pawn shops in near mint shape for wayyy less than they're worth.

How do you like your P95?

If you can, take a 5 gallon bucket of gravel and 6", 3 ft long, thick walled steel pipe to fire down into. Put rags atop the gravel, cover the top end of the pipe with stretched and wired inner tube rubber (like a drum head) cut a slit into the rubber, insert the barrel. If it's a longarm, you'll have to tilt the bucket a bit. 15" of gravel will stop 12 ga slugs or 308 ball ammo, guaranteed.
Classic

actually got a nice fabarm O/U from a store after watching it for several months. It got marked down twice and then the owner said he would discount further if paying cash. I asked why it never sold; he said most people came in don't know what it is or only want ARs or pistols.

Brought a brand new Whelen 35 from a pawn shop for a very good price a couple of years ago. They were the only one in Baton Rouge that one and the other gun shop that could order one was higher priced.

Best I can do is 75 cents on the bucket.
