If he was around camp I would have. He was in a pretty remote area. I didn't see a reason to kill him.

Although they are the only neurotoxin snake in North America

There are timber rattlesnakes with a neurotoxin as well.

they don't have pit viper fangs so they can't deliver much of it in a strike, you have to be fricking around with it at a level 10 to find out about it. Or so I've read.

This is true. And also why I believe they quit making the antivenom. It's very expensive, and you basically have to be in a coma to actually get a serious dose of venom. I can't remember how long it's been exactly, but there hasn't been a Coral snake bite victim in quite some time.

Good man. The chances of getting bit by a coral snake are miniscule at best.

Was he the guy who had it in his jacket pocket and it kept biting him over and over when he would put his hand in there? I remember reading a story about one of the few who died from a coral snake bite and it was something along those lines plus not going for help after being bitten thinking it was no big deal.

I had the pleasure of seeing one in the forest in east Texas. Much smaller than the op but they are really pretty snakes. After seeing the snake, the mouth looked like the size of a garden snake.

I do t know what the downvotes are for, there are pockets of Timber Rattlesnakes that have neurotoxic venoms. It’s actually one of three rattlesnakes species that have such venom. The Mojave and Sonoran Rattlesnakes are the other two.

But the Timbers are fascinating because it’s a rapid evolutionary shift in venom type.

I also, saw one in the Sabine National Forest in East Texas. I thought it was rather large for a Coral, maybe 2’ long, and very slender. The pic in the OP looks to be even longer than that. I believe that was the only one I ever saw.

there was one near dequincy or deridder a few years back.

I found one in st tammany parish in 1975. Thought it was a king snake. kept it for a few days.

everyone I know that has found them has been looking for them or other snakes under stuff and IN SANDY soil.

NAS cecil field if you looked you could find them found 2 in a 3 week period turkey hunting - i didnt keep them.

I seen two in my life.

You basically have to be holding them and they have to bite you around some loose skin such as the area between your fingers.

Had them at our hunting lease near Belmont, Tx. Saw a couple. Neighbors wife got bit by one and they flew her from the Sequin Hospital to San Antonio Hospital. After they gave her anti-venom she had a heart attack, She told us this around a campfire. Cost around &180,000 in medical bills. Bad azz snakes!

For a while back then, I couldn’t remember how that saying went. I came up with -

Red by black - better get back
Red by yellow - jolly good fellow.

My friend (in East Texas, again) set me straight, thank goodness.

Red by black - venom lack
Red by yellow - kill a fellow.

Just glad it never came to that.

Yep, I’ve seen 4 in the 2 years since we bought property west of Tomball, and about 15 copperheads in that same span. I saw a big king snake earlier today, only the second one of those I’ve seen unfortunately.

A few years ago some fool in SW Alabama picked one up to show his kids and got bit. As I recall, he thought it was harmless. He damn near died.

Been snake ketchin’ for 52 of my 57 years on this planet and never seen a coral. Never really been in any areas where they are common, aside from my Florida trip earlier this year (and struck out there). If I ever run across one, it’s a certainty that I won’t be able to resist the urge to pick it up.

Black on red will kill you dead
Black on yellow is a harmless fellow.

I'm colorblind so none of it makes sense anyway.

My concern on my property is for my dogs, my family all know not to mess with them, but to the dogs they look like a fun toy.

They are everywhere near my house in west Houston. I’ve probably my seen 5 or 6 this year. I have seen more if them than moccasins and we live on a small bayou.

We killed 4 of these between me and my immediate neighbors to our left and right within the first 2 years of living in SW Houston/Missouri City. Killed them all because all of our kids were really young at the time and wanted to eliminate the risk of them grabbing the pretty snake. I also had one crawl over my boot while bow hunting in a ground blind just south of Bay City, TX. That was startling. I just happened to look down at my phone to check football scores and saw movement below. All I had were arrows with rage broadheads so I just let him be and he slithered right on out.
