Do yourself a favor, take a kid fishing...

As Franc White used to always say to close his show "the Southern Sportsman". Well the kid has a long weekend from school and the weather was gorgeous today. Temps in the 80s, no humidity not a cloud in the sky. The aspens are in full color up on the peaks. We had to drop his uniforms off at the scout shop to have some sewing done and the lower provo River is about 10-15 mins from there. So we fished about 90 mins. He caught a couple and missed 3 or 4 more. But that wasn't the cool part. For the first time I thought he was truly a fly fisherman in his own right. The only help he had from dad was fly selection. There were some bugs hatching and I made some recommendations based on what I was seeing. I caught 2x as many as him and to him that was a good ratio keeping up with his old man.
Best day I've had in ages...

I fished the lower Provo last spring. Beautiful out there.
And I agree, take them outside and get the iPads out their hands as much as possible.

I’m proud to say that I was able to put the love of the outdoors in my son.
He’s in college now and has been taking his friends that have never fished with him on some of the rivers around Fayetteville.
Good job Lonnie.

This is what I call the "lower, Lower" as it's below the diversion and the flows drop by about 1/2. It's still irrigation season for a few more days and the river is cranking below the dam.
If you're every back out this way, give the middle a shot. It's a classic freestone wester tailrace river.

Even if it's not fishing, just spend time with your kids without phones in either of your hands.

He would agree with you. Here's a paragraph from a speech he wrote a few years ago (7th grade) in his debate class...
quote:
While in scouting, I have learned numerous life skills, the value of good friendships and the importance of serving my community. For example, in scouts I have learned first aid, how to build a fire without matches and how to tie tons of knots including some with only one hand. I have also written postcards to soldiers stationed overseas, collected food and made sandwiches for the hungry, cleaned beaches on Puget sound in Washington State and many other service projects. However, in America, these behaviors are becoming uncommon in the 21st century, especially with my generation. In his book Bowling Alone, Robert D. Putman argued that over the past few decades, in American society there has been a significant decrease in Social and Civic engagement. Putnam also says that 25% of the fall off in Civic engagement can be blamed on the expansion of electronic entertainment. It is important to note that his book was written in 1995 before the widespread use of the internet. I would argue that civic engagement has only gotten worse as internet and social media use has skyrocketed. The Kaiser Family Foundation found that in 2009, kids between the ages 8 and 18 spend an average of 7.5 hours of entertainment screen time each day. If you do the math, 7.5 hours times 365 days equals 114 full days of watching your screen just for fun! That's almost 1/3 of a year just watching TV or on your phone. There is no wonder why we now have no time for friends or family.

I’ve got one that turned into a hell of a fly fisherman. I cracked the door open and he jumped through it in a big way.
Congrats on raising an outdoorsman. But you boys should really be chasing elk bugles on a long weekend.

Not much of a hunter. And he's on the Mountain bike team. That takes up most weekends in the fall.
