The building was on the corner. It's the same building that 13th Gate haunted house uses.

I haven't been in that area in 20 years at least!
Thanks, the pics in this thread brought back a ton of memories. One in particular was the times we would cut class
on spring afternoons, go to Steinbergs and get crickets and shiners and hit a friends pond somewhere south of campus. Someone probably has a mansion on that pond now. That area is totally grown into subdivisions now. Huge bream, sacalait and the occasional bass and cold beer made the day worthwhile.
Memory may fail me but I am not wrong about Steinberg's selling bait, am I?

Parnell's was another absolutely great store.

Man, I wish they were still around.

Such fond memories of that place....got my Ithaca Model 37 16ga pump there for my 16th birthday--way long time ago (yes I'm old).

Wish it was still open!

I can remember talking to Fred Parnell in Pecan Island when I was young. Steinbergs had marsh leased just below my friends family land there. We killed ducks then in numbers today's hunters can only imagine.

St. Phillip’s street location was awesome. They also had a small store in the old Bon Marche shopping center. I’m the proud owner of a Belgium-made Browning Sweet 16 shotgun my dad purchased from Steinbergs and gave to me on my 16th birthday almost 50 years ago!

Storytelling time: My great uncle told me a story about Steinberg’s in the 70’s. Uncle brought his well worn 1940’s era Winchester model 12 into the store and laid it on the gun counter and asked how much would they give him on a trade for a new Browning Auto 5. Salesman picked up the old pump and looked at it for a few seconds and told uncle,” Pick any damn Browning you see behind me, even swap.” My uncle thanked the salesman and grabbed his old shotgun and walked out the store. Uncle told me he had no idea his gun was valuable until that day in Steinberg’s.

They had an old sxs shotgun with the barrels splitting and going at 90* angles with a sign above it that read ‘For a Crowded Duck Blind’.

10 bull springs after "wet" cold fronts..

Isn't that where Skip Bertman put on one of his first "baseball clinics for kids" after he got the LSU job and he still talks about how so many more people where there for a Turkey calling "clinic"(which I believe was Kenny Morgan).

It's hard for stores like that to compete with the big box stores just from a distribution and marketing stand point - the independents stay relevant by offering top notch service, actual product expertise and places like Chags and Puglia's where they know your name.

My dad entered their big buck contest in 1984 and came in second in the typical. He killed a 10 pt that had a 22” inside spread. Brow times were 12 and 13”. It was a beast of a deer back then. I loved that store.
