Not gonna be a popular opinion, but the Feds need to set seasons as 30/3 for about 10 years.

There are many reasons that ducks aren’t as prevalent in Louisiana and Mississippi, but the main reason is that there aren’t as many ducks.

I get to go hunt some places in Arkansas that are blamed for short stopping ducks with massive rest areas.

Even those places aren’t killing birds like the past.

We need about a decade of 30 day seasons and three duck limits. I bet the numbers jump dramatically.

Went to my blind yesterday to take off the old brush. Took about two hours, nothing.

I doubt 30/3 will even work anymore but hey, let’s try something.

Do camo, surface drive, shot shell, spinning wing, duck call, wader companies have lobbyists? Me thinks it will take a nuclear bomb to cut limits/dates today.
I do agree with you though

Habitat Flats is only $6250 for a 3-day “hunt”.

Lots of birds between I-10 and El Campo right now

Birds scattered by Sunday. I heard Bucksnag (Garwood) took everyone fishing on Saturday instead of hunting.

Stuff north of 10 filled up on Sunday/Monday. Even seeing a few greenheads in the mix.

Birds were good on Saturday in the Garwood area. Saw 25% of that on Sunday.

Trust me, I am not as mad at them as I once was. We hunt the opening weekend of each split here in Texas. The camp we stay at is on Trinity Bay and has a nice pier with lights so we fish every evening and most times end up with a few Reds/Black Drum that we usually keep if legal. The fishing offsets the duck hunting because yes, the duck hunting has gotten worse down here. That's why we hunt the openers which are usually decent and then play it by ear on other hunts. Fringe benefit of knowing the outfitter for 30 or so years. We don't have to really book months in advance. Also got a buddy that has a real nice farm on the Eastside as well. He manages it exclusively for waterfowl and it is usually pretty good and I get a few hunts there as well. Plus, I still go back to NE LA and hunt with buddies. Plus, we go to Canada now every Fall.

I hunted in north battleford (north of saskatoon) in early september. There were tons of mallards and pintail. We also did very well with specks and canadians. Didn't have a lot of snows.

We've hunted there in early to mid september for approximately 15 years running, with the exception of COVID, and the numbers appear to be about the same every year. This year was noticieably wetter than the previous 3.

True, but hunting is not the reason. It's habitat, habitat, habitat, and weather.

Yea, even now there is more water than it has been lately. Even the holes that don’t have water are muddy. Hopefully they get good rounds of snow again and snow runoff isn’t absorbed as fast.

We are about 102 miles SE of N. Battleford and 73 miles SW of Saskatoon. Lot of mallards, specs, lessers and some Snows left. Still a bunch North of us they say.

I’m in TX panhandle and hunted cranes last weekend, there’s plenty.

Not seeing or hearing many geese, noticeably down from last 2 seasons. Way more birds in area in 23 at this time. But we had snow and ice for vets weekend that year.

Duck numbers are better than last year at this time, but it’s been a very wet year up here and they are scattered throughout the region. Still have BW teal coming thru, killed one this morning and hadn’t seen any last week or so.

I agree habitat plays a huge role, as do farming practices and weather patterns. That said, farming practices aren’t changing, habitat restoration is not working as intended and we cannot control the weather. We can control season length and harvest numbers.

I'm beginning to think no till farming has had a greater impact than anything else. The amount of waste grain left in fields is incredible. Add a couple reservoirs and the birds don't need to leave the area, even when it gets bitterly cold.
