I have a Nosler .28 that can make that shot easily. I also have a six-hundred-yard range within an hour of me.
If he hit it at 800 yards, he's a hell of a shot for sure, but that Nosler ain't fricking around like wimpy guns and ammo. It takes a lot of the guesswork out at that range.

I would disagree with the total blanket statement like that. Most people it’s true - he’ll most hunters need to stay under 250 yards.
If one shoots regularly, year round and the conditions are right 800 yards with today’s rifles and glass isn’t a “never” shot for some.
Up to June I shot at least 500 rounds a month and can regularly hit a target at a mile. Would I take a mile shot at big game? No. Would I take a 800 yard one if I’m in a solid shooting position, have time to get the dope correct, the wind isn’t terrible and the animal isn’t running? Maybe.

No shoulder fired rifle chambering short of something like .375 cheytac is making an 800 yard shot in the field on game "easy."
Wind hold and shooting position are ALWAYS going to be the largest errors on these kinds of shots. More horsepower and high BC bullets can reduce the wind call error, at the cost of higher recoil which magnifies the shooting position problem.
There's no secret sauce here. Nobody is taking extremely high confidence shots at 800 yards in the field without a SHITLOAD of practice regardless of what hardware they own.

Most people have never even practiced at 200 much less past that. If they do it's on a lead sled so they are still delusional. The first time I shot off a back pack at a 8" plate 200 yards away I was served humble pie. I practiced at 300 before going OK a few years ago. It paid off as I bang flopped one at 250 from a shite rest.

100% agree with you on this. I was taking it for granted that the shooter was properly trained and had a spotter reading him proper dope off. I have made 3 shots on target over a mile with my Nosler. Yes, I had Pro's setting it up and it wasn't from a field game shot.

Nosier 28 has about 1500 pounds of energy at 800 yards. Certainly enough gun.
