Just getting into turkey hunting and would like to start learning to call. What do you guys recommend for a first call? Box, slate or mouth? any specific ones. I know it will take some time but would like to get started. thanks

Slate or box. Hard to mess it up. Mouth calls are handy trying to seal the deal. But you will need to practice.

I would suggest a slate call. Allows you to reproduce most of the sounds a hen turkey makes with some practice.
Also I’ve seen a lot of turkeys killed by guys running push pin calls also. Super easy to run.

Buy all and see what you like. I never had any trouble with a mouth call.

Mouth calls aren't hard, just go to academy and get a 3 pack of diaphragms and a slate call. Watch some Primos instructional videos
Don't try to call too loud and learn to match the cadence

I’m just getting into it also. I found the slate and box calls are fairly easy to learn. I practiced with a buddy’s old slate call before buying my own
For slate: I bought a Primos Rare Breed slate call. I was about $40 on Amazon. The pot and striker looks to be pretty good quality for the price and it is fairly easy to use.
For Box: still working on getting a regular box calls but I do have a Quaker Boy Easy Yelper push button box calls. Really easy to use and you only have to use one hand to operate it.
Mouth calls: I’m still learning how to use mouth calls so I really don’t know what would be the easiest to start with. Google beginner mouth calls or go buy a cheap one to practice with.

get 'em all........start practicing with everything. like others have said the slate and box will be easier to become efficient, but might as well start practicing with the diaphragm as well. stick it in your mouth while driving.

Get
20 diaphragms
2 boxes
4 slates
2 crystals
6 strikers
2 wing bones (from your first kill)
A trumpet
A hoot stick
A crow call (young and old)
A thunder gobble
A shake gobble
And you’ll be on my level
I’m below average at all of them lol

Get a lynch fool proof box call and whatever glass call that fits your budget. You will have everything you need to kill a turkey. Might get a crow call too so that you can use it to make one gobble while you get as close as possible to setup on him.
Buy a variety pack of diaphragm calls and put them in your truck to practice with. You’ll probably find out that a certain cut fits your wind pattern better. Keep that one and throw the rest out of the window. Learn to make simple sounds on a mouth call. Clean clucks and 3-4 note yelps. You can use these when a turkey is close and you can’t get to your other calls without spooking him.
Record yourself outside and listen to the recordings. It sounds different outside and 20 yards away than in the truck or house.

I’m pretty good with the mouth calls for yelping and cutting maybe a purr
But I can’t do the putt or popping worth a damn. I had my uvula cut out for snoring years ago and can’t get the roll

Lynch No. 101 box call has killed more dam gobblers than you could shake a stick at

One of the best calls you can make is scratching in the leaves.

Just remember this, "The best call is no call at all". Curiosity will kill em!! Never over call. If he cuts your calls, put it down and wait. Call soft. Learn cadence like the guy mentioned above. It might be 5 min or it might be 2-5 hrs. He's coming eventually. They know exactly what tree you are sitting up against. After he's done with his 1st lady, he's coming. If you aren't a patient person, turkey hunting isn't for you. If you have a buddy that turkey hunts, ask to go with him and listen and learn instead of just going in the blind. But if thats your only option, go get em. As far as calls. You'll keep buying them until you find the sweet 1. Me personally, id start with a Houndstooth glass over cherry pot call. They run easy and sound awesome. Yeah they cost a lil bit but you'll thank yourself bc they are easy to learn on and they are awesome calls. Mouth calls, huh just keep buying them until you find 1 that fits your mouth and you can run it. Good luck..
