Back when I was about 17-18 years old, I had a Remington 887 that I bought to duck hunt with. I had just started duck hunting and of course HAD to shoot 3.5’s. I was probably 125lbs back then, and let me tell ya, that gun rocked me on every shot

Had a nice 45-70 and felt that the recoil stirred up the floaters in my eyes.

I want to shoot something like that. Why’s your buddy have it? He after hippos?
Well, one, he enjoys shooting big bores. Two, he goes to Africa every 2-3 years, so it’s possible. Likely will try for an elephant before a hippo

Turkey loads in my Browning BPS 12 ga kick pretty good.

Tried shooting some skeet with an older fella’s crack barrel 10 gauge “goose gun” when I was 16 or 17 and thought I was big and bad. That mother fricker damn near sat me down. I’m perfectly fine if I never grab onto that thing ever again

I shot 125 shells yesterday on the trap field. Got a nice bruise this morning.

A 458 lott pushes a 500gr bullet at something like 2200 fps.
A 12ga 3.5" heavy TSS is moving 2.5 Oz (1094gr of shot, add a wad to that )@ 1000 fps. More than double the weight of a heavy 458 lott load.
3.5" 12ga shells are STUPID amounts of recoil. Its horrible.
Pretty sure 3.5" TSS loads are about 3x the recoil of a 300win mag

Yep. And if they made 4.5” people would buy the shite out of those too

When you start looking at those shotgun shell payloads in grains, it's pretty eye opening. There's a whole lot of shite flying down the barrel.
My personal worst non-shotgun recoil experience was a sub 7 pound .375 H&H with some 300gr partitions. It wasn't unbearable off hand, but off the bench it was something else. Absolutely brutal recoil. A 9 pound .338 win mag is a pussy cat by comparison. That h&h was ferocious. It took me a while to realize it, but the reason I couldn't make it shoot well was just because I couldn't handle it.
Worst experience ever was a crack barrel 12 gauge slug gun with a lightfield 3" slug. Some kind of rediculous full bore abomination that's like 800 grains at 1500 fps. Absolutely stupid.

sabotage slugs sucks.
I used to have a Winchester 1300 rifled slug gun with a 3x9 scope. It was moa at 100 yards from a led sled, but I've never shot a gun that kicked that hard to this day. Was shooting 3 inch winchester partition 385 grain slugs.
Aside from that, when my brother cut his teeth in duck hunting he went with some friends and needed a gun. Our uncle let him borrow an old single shot crack barrel 12 gauge. I would say it wasn't far behind my experience with the slug gun

they don't bother me in my gun, but I've put a few through my kid's 20 that has a youth LOP stock on it. The knuckle on my thumb hits my cheekbone without fail

My first deer rifle was a Remington 7600 (pump) .270.Took me forever to get it sighted in.I could only shoot it 3 times at a sitting.Felt like if I shot it a 4th time I was going to get a nosebleed.Never killed a deer with it.
I bought a .270 Browning A-bolt stainless with synthetic stock,I could sit and shoot a box of 20 rounds and didn’t bother me at all.
Later I bought the same rifle in 7mm magnum,it kicks a little compared to the .270 but not really uncomfortable.

I hate shooting 3.5” shells. I used to pattern and hunt turkeys with them. With hevishot I went to 3”. With TSS I changed to a compact 20 gauge. There is no reason to shoot 3.5” shells unless you need to swat cripples or just like pain.
With that said, the most miserable gun I own to shoot is an 8.5# howa 1500 in a hogue stock chambered in .375 ruger. It sends a 300 grain bullet moving at about 2650 fps.
A 3.5” turkey load is sending 875 grains of shot (2 oz) at 1200 fps.
Recoil is a combination of recoil energy and recoil velocity. That .375 has more than I like of both. Even though it has less total recoil energy than a 12 gauge, the recoil velocity is much more violent. It is like the difference between a .45 acp and a .40. The .45 has more actual recoil, but is more pleasant to shoot than a .40. Same with your high pressure big bore centerfire rifle cartridges and shotguns.

I have a crack barrel 444 that beats the shite out of me. I don't really notice it when shooting deer but when I check the zero every year I'm glad I dont have to shoot it often. A couple of years ago the rings loosened up and I shot about 15 rounds and could feel it on both sides of my shoulder.

Only stipulation was you had to walk out in the backyard and shoot a 3” #4 buckshot to prove you could handle the gun.
You dad was a great man. Reminds me of my dad.
Oh, and on the hard hitting gun, my dad and brother each had a 10 gauge browning pump with short barrel for deer hunting. 3.5” 00 buck would knock the crap out of you.
My dad also had a TC 7mm-08 pistol and when you pulled the trigger, this thing would rare up like 2feet. You had to make it a point to hold on or it was flying out your hands.
Also had a Dan Wesson 44 mag 8” barrel competition pistol that was a beast as well.

I went to my gun club to shoot a couple of years ago. Outside range.
Guy in the 1st lane had a revolver he was working on while I was setting up a couple of lanes down. Had everything set up except for my target downrange. As I was getting my target stapled and ready he touched one off. The concussion that hit me was amazing.
I looked around and trying to figure out what the hell it was. He touched off another and the concussion was just violent.
I decided to move down several more lanes.
Got to talking with him and found out he was shooting a .460 mag out of a ported 4 or 5” barrel S&W revolver.
Asked if I wanted to shoot it and was quick to say yes.
He was standing behind me and I told him he needed to experience the concussion of his gun and to move to my side. The recoil wasn’t a sharp recoil but it was massive. The grips on the gun protected your hands from the snappiness. But, after I shot it the guy yelled WOW!! I looked at him and said, told you.

Funny you say that. Later in my dad’s life he bought me and him BPS 10’s with back to back serial numbers. Every year he’d buy me a case of steel shot to duck hunt with. I’d come home with a bruised shoulder a lot of weekends after duck hunting. Before he passed, he gave his gun to my son, so now we have the 2 guns that rolled off the assembly line back to back.
