Everyone suggesting the Tikka T3X, do you have it in Lite or Superlite?
Those are the same gun except for some minimal fluting on the barrel that shaves a few ounces off the superlite. Comes in stainless or blued. I have a stainless superlite but again very minor differences.
Where it gets confusing is the veil/roughtech “lite”/D-18/CTR and almost anything else that comes threaded from tikka is a heavier barrel profile. Adds a good bit of weight (and cost usually). Tikka knows people want rifles threaded now but has been hesitant to do it on the thinner contour barrels.
Lots of lites/superlites have been aftermarket threaded 1/2x28 with no issues, and it’ll run you about $150 at a gunsmith.

You are going to buy a fine gun, now spend time at the gun range to zero the scope and become very familiar with it. Before going to the lease

It’s very popular and came back before many others but you could always find 7.62 NATO which will fire out of a .308 safely.

Checking Midway, there are 167 factory loadings for .308.
No other caliber, including .223, is close to that number.
.308 rules!
btw, 7mm-08, an excellent cartridge, is well down the popularity list with 32 factory loadings,

If you rank supply chain as an important factor, 308 is probably top ranked.
I had an couple of aught sixes but when COVID came I grabbed a 308.

Post 2020, you'd be crazy not to.
Not only availability, but cost. The oddball stuff is absurdly expensive when you can find it.
.308, .270, .30-06, 6.5 creedmoor, and .223/5.56 are basically the only centerfires you can count on staying available.

For 99% of the deer hunters it is all that is needed.
If you don’t use hot loads it’s about the same recoil as a 7mm08 and if you shoot hot loads it’s almost a 30-06. BC is not the best compared to a 6.5 but at less than 500yd it’s irrelevant.
I like variety but if I could only have one rifle it would be a tikka 308.

Benelli LUPO in .300 Win Mag. There is no such thing as a "starter" deer rifle.

I have both barrel profiles and "minor" is the right word. The fluted was just what I was able to find during covid supply chain issues. If I found the caliber/configuration I wanted the lite/superlite profile wouldn't matter to me at all.

Cripplemores are a popular round. Especially with the deer tracking guys. It really gives those dogs a chance to work. Maybe even have to catch a live deer.
Weird, the three I shot with mine last year dropped instantly, not taking another step.
Use the correct rounds, and take the right shot, and its plenty, even for a novice like myself.

I think I’m up to 5 shot 5 killed with my 6.5cr. I somewhat bought it as an experiment to see if it truly sucked like everyone talked about.
The majority of the issues that people have is from shooting thin skinned bullets that don’t exit and don’t leave any blood trail. Eldx is a great bullet and I have killed multiple deer at various ranges with it in various calibers, I have had a few bang flops and a few 50-100yd death runs with no blood.
A deer that runs 40yd was only alive for 4sec if he runs a 4 flat 40 like every athlete on the OT. So if he lives 8-10 seconds tbat bullet did a pretty good job,,the problem is not a drop of blood when he bails off into a clear cut and it’s 250yd from the shot and you don’t know where to even start looking!!
