Need the OB's opinion:

I am leaving the day after Christmas to head to Nebraska for a goose hunting trip. I have a Stevens double-barrelled 16ga from the 1930s that belonged to my grandfather. I'd like to take it along to try to pop a bird with it strictly for sentimental reasons. It wouldn't be my main gun. Just shoot a bird or two and then stow it away.

Do y'all think it would handle steel shot? I've got some 2.75", #2 shot from Federal. Or not worth the risk?

Absolutely not worth the risk.

Is it a 530A?

What is the choke on the gun?

I personally wouldn’t use it but if it’s full choke, steel will ruin it.

Not worth the risk. Unload the 16ga and fill them with some bismuth from bismuth 12ga if you can’t find bismuth 16ga.

I would definitely not shoot steel in a gun that old.
Also make sure it’s a 2 3/4 chamber. Lots of 2 5/8 16 gauges were made in that era.

I have a double barrel Ithaca with Damascus barrels that is about that old . Two gunsmith told me they wouldn't even shoot low brass through it . Wall hanger from my great grandpa . It is also a 16 gauge .

I have a Browning Auto 5 made in the ‘30s with a 2 5/8” chamber. It’s almost pristine and beautiful to look at. I ordered several cases that were especially made for it and hunt doves or rabbits with it occasionally.

If it’s a dbl Stevens with 2 5/8” chambers I am sure that it would probably not even close with 2 3/4 shells. If it does close you would likely be ok shooting it with lead but definitely NOT STEEL.

That old it may have Damascus barrels, which i wouldn't absolutely not shoot any modern shells through. I'd have someone load some black powder shells if I was bent on using a Damascus barrel shotgun.

That old with regular steel barrels, eh. Technically it'd be OK with steel shot but I wouldn't do it, more because waterfowl shells tend to be loaded hot and heavy rather than the fact that they are steel shot. If it has normal steel barrels, get some target shells and go rabbit hunting or something like that with it.

I wouldn’t shoot steel through that gun. At best, you’ll shoot the chokes out ant you may actually split the barrel.
