Nothing wrong with a dog being an outside dog. As long as they have shade/shelter and food and water they are just fine.

What the hell happened to this place?

Don’t do it. Don’t let them talk you into it. Your super logical holier than thou attitude won’t allow it. Let someone that isn’t a wanna be hardass get the dog you were planning on getting.

All dogs should be outside dogs.

Get a dog. Let it be inside. Limit it to living room if need be and it’ll be your best friend.

You have no business getting a dog. Period.

How do you house an outside dog?
Dog house

Would one of those invisible fences work? Can I diy?
Yes and yes. Some are far better than others, and it does require some training and occasional battery changing.

How do you handle vacations or time away?
Have friend or family feed it and check water once a day.

not paying for $1200 teeth cleanings. Etc…
Generally, you can worm it once a month with ivomec, 1/10cc per 10 lbs, for dirt cheap and itll live a long happy life. That's just about all the medical upkeep they need other than puppy shots.

Nothing wrong with having an outside dog. They need shelter to sleep in when weather gets bad but they don’t need much.
You need a fence though. Otherwise he’ll end up dead. The wireless fences are ok, but eventually fail.

If you don't want it inside, don't get it.

Same restrictions would apply.
And those restrictions work with a cat. Get a cat, hell get 3.

Gift your wife and kids and dog and move out so the dog can come inside.

I’m allergic to pet dander so I eventually plan to get an outside dog. Either for hunting and/or security. You are correct that pre-suburbia, most dogs were outside only. I don’t think there is anything wrong with that provided the dog has water, food and shade. They have evolved outdoors and the modern inside pet is a relatively new phenomenon.

You obviously don't want a dog. So don't get one.
Eta - I'm fine with a dog living outside, but build a fence. I despise dog owners letting them roam the neighborhood , crossing streets etc. Underground fences are not 100%
The collie across the street would rather roam the neighborhood while getting shocked than she would would sit in her yard unshocked.

There are many, many "outside dogs" that are happy/healthy/well cared for. Your concerns are all easily handled with a dog house, some bedding, a kennel/ invisible fence and a neighbor's kid to check on it when you're gone. A stray from the pound would think that the above setup and regular meals was heaven.
But I agree with nearly everyone that you sound like more of a goldfish guy. You already seem frustrated by the hypothetical dog, and that's a recipe for disaster. That doesn't make you an a-hole-- but even slightly neglecting a dog that you never wanted in the first place certainly does.

There is no reason to have a pet and a family at the same time. Dogs are good for 60 to 70 year old dudes whose wife and kids are gone. Before 60 they are a burden, after 70 they are a burden. At the same time as kids they are not needed. Dogs live longer than 10 years, so just get a pig that only last 7 years.

You've come to the wrong place.

If you are gonna have an outside dog, you are going to have to give it heart worm preventative meds….100% infection rate if you don’t.
I feel pretty much the same way as you….that’s why I don’t have a dog either.

- get the kids a dog
- wireless fences work great (youtube them, trian dog with it, fairly easy)
-vacations can board them. Numerous services out there or vets do it
-cheap? Perfect, go adopt! Tons of dogs need a good home, find the one that fits you and your family.
