He could possibly have gotten away with the physical attack hoax with a slap on his very limp wrist. If he put that letter in the mail that is a terroristic threat and a federal crime. That will get him time.

How long before his attorney announces that Smollett has been checked into a mental clinic, and that poor Jussie has a history of illness and an obsessive / compulsive disorder that causes him confusion. You see? It's not REALLY his fault. He's a victim in this.
