I think a very easy calculation would show Denmark receives much more “benefit” from friendship with the United States.

We aren’t the ones saying, shoot first and ask questions later. That was them.

I’ll reframe my opinion then - utilize Greenland for the processing of said metals

Building a REM manufacturing facility in Greenland would be an order of magnitude more expensive than in the US or Canada. Logistics and energy to run the process (it’s an energy hog) would be brutal in Greenland.

In the US we could use our abundant natty gas supplies and support US domestic drillers and US manufacturing workers with the processing facility.

It's an extreme comparison because Greenland has no real ties to Denmark. What's best for them, US partnership or Denmark? Seems the people are ready to choose for themselves.

Iceland then Greenland were discovered by the Vikings in the 10th century, when the Danes and Norwegians were closely intertwined.

Long story short, much later Greenland became a territory of Denmark, eventually self governing except for foreign relations and defense matters assigned to Denmark.

So far, the Greenlander's are saying they wish to remain with Denmark.

It's more than Denmark.... it's NATO.
We've paid for their defense for decades and for what?? Having the EU put money in Russias pocket purchasing their oil/gas while the EU shut down their own energy production, depending on the US to carry the financial burden of their defense?
Those idiots have been funding the very force they claim to fear!!!
Eisenhower warned about this....
The US has allowed others to take advantage of our prosperity for too long.
We've paid for others nations defense long enough, now we'll take care of our own. If NATO countries don't like it, they frick right off.
And what Carney is doing in Canada by allowing the Chinese to go in and set up shop will be next on the list....

Denmark can't defend them from Russia or China.

Paying to lease bases/assets in Europe and position our own troops in places we want our troops to be is not paying Denmark’s defense costs.

Dumb people who parrot that talking point don’t realize we’d have assets in Europe—and pay for them to be there, whether NATO existed or not. Bilateral agreements would be no less expensive and would be functionally identical considering how the EU defense agreements operate.

How do they do so directly? Denmark has a pretty reasonably sized military for its population. They buy from us. We have no permanent bases in Denmark and none of our European bases would be removed if Denmark weren’t in NATO or didn’t exist. They don’t “owe” us anything. We have a mutually beneficial relationship and they were one of our best allies in the alliance through the war on terror bullshite.

One of our principle satellite and missile defense radar stations is located on Danish territory (Greenland). We also have full access to Greenland and choose not to use it for anything other than said radar base.

Denmark answered the call of its ally after 9/11 and deployed thousands of troops to Afghanistan (Iraq, too, for that matter). Denmark lost more soldiers per capita in defense of America than any other NATO country (aside from the U.S.). We are friends with Denmark, to the incalculable benefit of both.

Incalculable, huh?

Anyway, you're right. The US should ignore the disastrous ramifications to America and the West of Eastern dictators getting a access to Greenland's rare earths (not to mention the militarily strategic position) from a country far to weak to oppose them.

Yes, whatever Denmark lost in Afghanistan outweighs the potential weakening of American and Western hegimony by letting them control something so critical to America's national defense and technological future.

Man you should move to Denmark

They benefit tremendously being in an alliance with the worlds super power. They have no threats simply because if someone messes with them they have 31 other counties coming to help. They currently do not meet the 2% GDP spending requirement for NATO, and are subsidized by the US. They also benefit from being allowed our military weaponry and technology, the f35 for example. NATO is nothing without the United States. You’re acting like Denmarks military can handle itself, be just as good as the United States, or doesn’t need us for long term survival. If that was the case they wouldn’t be spending money on protection in an alliance. We could leave NATO today and we would be fine, very few if any of the 31 other members could say the same.
